Description
Here is a tutorial to sew your basic sphere! Requested byHope this is what you wanted! The reason it does actually need its own tutorial is because (those of you who have tried to make a sphere before would know) that it will turn out a weird shape if you don't measure up properly. If the segments are too thin, it will be a oval football shape, not a sphere. If they're too fat, it will look like a pentagonal thingy or something weird like that...
Use this formula to work out how wide and tall to make each segment! If there's anything you don't understand, please just ask!
By the way, once you get the hang of this pattern, you can tweak the segment shapes to make different shaped plushes! For example, turnip-kun is a tear-drop shape. Each of his segments is slightly fatter at the bottom to give that effect.
Have fun! :3
Some designs where I used this formula:
--> Archen's round belly
--> Turnip kun

no, you're good! if you added a centimeter all round that's the seam allowance

Thank you for that tutorial - I was already certain how the sphere had to look like, but I had no idea about the formula ^.^

This is handy, thanks! Is there an exact way to get the shape of the "cats eye" right or do you just eye-ball it (heh the puns)? I have a bit of a math background so I might try and figure out the curvature and get back to you - I'm betting it can be done exact with a compass. ^^

i eyeball it haha
because if youre using stretchy fabric, it's not too critical.

You have no idea how helpful this will be to me in the future (even if it involves math). I once tried making a Kirby, and he turned into a football XD

could you please make a tutorial on how to machine sew a sphere >w
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
scilk In reply to Rainbowgum [2013-01-02 03:11:51 +0000 UTC]
How? What do you mean exactly? To machine sew anything, you put right sides together, pin it, and use a simple straight stitch with the machine (or by hand) Sew the curved sides together. Take a look at a beach ball if you need to see how! ^_^

May I ask how to make this kind of head pattern? [link]

Wow, that kind of shape looks hard!! I can't really describe it, but if you look at this link [link] there are some pictures further down of the head of a different plush by the same maker, without hair so you can see the pattern pieces she used.

Thanks a lot for your help! I quite figured out the way it is form ^^ but I still need trying for how the face got all nose shaped like feature
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
scilk In reply to Reiviyoruka [2012-12-03 00:02:20 +0000 UTC]
Oh, the nose seems to have been done from a dart on the inside. So basically, the fabric for the face is cut in one piece (like a circle or oval shape), then folded in half with right sides together, and a slightly crescent shaped dart is sewn from forehead to nose.

What if you want the bottom to be flat, but the top still spherical?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
scilk In reply to Sabreisk [2012-11-30 01:25:26 +0000 UTC]
weeeell, then when you make the paper pattern, simply cut the bottom off the segment. Make it as normal, and it will be like a hemisphere (or maybe 2/3 of a sphere, depending on how much you cut off). Then, stitch a round section onto the bottom, to make the flat base! Does that make sense?

i think the steps are as clear as can be.
i just gotta try this next time i need a sphere. i gotta.

as soon I saw some numbers and formulas I give up reading.. I hate math and numbers.. but seems like something good. maybe I'll read it some day, when i stop to hate math..
hihi, just kidding.. I'll never stop hating it

haha well I walk through it slowly, so as long as u know how high the sphere has to be, you can do it! You just have to try... trying is the first step.

Must... focus... on... math... @_@
Heh, to do a sphere I sew random pieces overlapping, which makes them look like lumpy footballs .-. This will be useful!

scilk In reply to Jade-Parwin [2012-09-14 22:26:53 +0000 UTC]
haha yeah... it's a problem! XD Hey, if it's too much to focus on, just skip straight to the RECAP slide. Or, if you're still having problems, when you want to sew a sphere, tell me how high you want it to be, and I'll do the maths for you ^_^
