Description This photo is done using a technique called "painting with light". This is not a digital manipulation, but was done in camera, pretty much exactly as you see it, other than minor adjustments, cleanup, and toning. A full explanation of the technique can be found on my website FAQ [link] .

This was photographed with a Canon EOS 20D and 28-70mm f2.8 L lens. 30 second exposure. Hand held light. This print is available for purchase on my website.

Administrators: the model is over 18 and I have a signed model release.

I read your article on your site. That's so neat! It's like getting in with your hands to push paint or charcoal around, only you're using light. It makes parts of the picture look hand painted. It's cool!

Interesting concept and quite a nifty technique, too.
The composition bothers me, though. It's so immensely heavy at the bottom, with all the dark shapes, but at the top.... but more specifically, the top right. The darkness on the left makes the upper right seem somewhat unbalanced, and not exactly in a good way.

i don't like the vase right behind his hand, its too distracting, but thats just my opinion.
besides for that i do love the mood, effect, and especially the pose; turned out nicely and you found a beautiful model.

wow...that is absolutely amazing....the feeling it has and just the way its layed out....it to me...when i read into it makes me feel how all humans seem to be pupets in the world. robotic machienes that do what they are told...moved around, peraided as if connected to strings. but thats just me....i tend to read into things to much sometimes! hehe!

A very beautiful and different image... The strings are clever - helping him hold still for a long exposure, and adding to the image at the same time.

Thank you for explaining what you did. (I checked out the link to your site) I'm in school for photography right now ([link] ), and I hope to try out this technique in the studio...

Wow.

Its so.. calming. The the sepia effect really makes the photo ^_^
I personally feel it would have worked fine, if not better without the fan. The whole effect of the photo has this old, classic look to it. The fan represents modern technology and IMO looks out of place. Perhaps if just the stool were there... great work all the same.

scottpix In reply to Nicola-B [2005-09-19 05:47:06 +0000 UTC]

Actually, that isn't a fan. It is an old spotlight, probably from the 1930s, I'd guess. I was seeking an old fashioned feel, and I, too, debated over the use of that prop. But I thought it looked old enough to fit the theme. I can see how some people might not like it, but I did. *shrug*

Don't know if you know much about tarot or not, but this has a distinct Hanged Man feel.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

scottpix In reply to karacol [2005-09-19 05:44:38 +0000 UTC]

I know almost nothing about tarot, other than what I've seen in cheesy TV shows and bad movies, which I suspect it grossly inaccurate. But now that you mention it, perhaps I should look into it to see if it spurs other interesting photo ideas.

karacol In reply to scottpix [2005-09-23 15:13:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there's a lot of cheese to wade through, but I've found it to be a really good structure to build upon regardless of its esoteric funtions, just because it's so archetypal that it's fun to play with the imagery. The Particle Tarot by Dave Mckean comes to mind, as a good example of an artist using tarot as a series framework. [link]
