Description
Behold one of the weirdest fish there is: Bathypterois grallator, the tripod fish. This fish stands motionless on its stilt-like fin projections at the bottom of the ocean, waiting for food to bump into its elongated, outstretched pectoral fins. As far as I know they can't "walk" on their stilts (rather, they tuck in those fins and swim normally), but they'd be even more delightfully creepy if they could.

This is a pencil sketch I drew for my spring 2010 art class. I used multiple references for their anatomy (the face in particular was hard to work out), but primarily used photos of this realistically-detailed model. The fish's stilts in my drawing should actually be even longer, but I shortened them so that the whole animal would fit on the page without the body being too tiny.
