...But I intended this comic to have the same effect whether or not you know the background story. In fact, I think it works even better if you don't.

SeeΒ www.facebook.com/bellminercolo… This is an awesome representation of one of the hypotheses of dieback but there is no evidence to suggest that is actually what happens. There is more to the story

Well, that is if you don't read what's on the link, parasitic wasps are used to keep pests down.

You seriously need your own tv show or published magazine or something. Adults need to be as curious and amused by fascinating science and cartoons as kids are. maybe you could be like a fucked up adult cartoon series on the Discovery Channel someday. This is great.

Goodness me, I did a lot of research on bell miners, lerps, dieback, effect on other birds etc, last year and late 2007. What an unusual topic for a comic strip! I commend you for depicting such an off-beat topic, and I agree with Skragga that Parasitica is... a bit too happy.

well, without any previous knowlege on the subject, i would assume that parasitica is laying her eggs in the larve, which the birds eat to protect the larvae, but the lerps (or parasticia-eggs) already at them?? just going out on a limb here.

The bottom of the comic has the URL to an article where I write about lerps

Bell miners eat the sugary cases that Lerps secrete and protect them from most predators, but can't protect them from parasitic wasps.

This is possibly your most adorable comic yet.

The first time I read it I hadn't read the article yet, and I still thought that a bird crying "LERRRRRRPS!" was a damn funny punchline.

"Lerps" is probably one of the funnest words in existence to say out loud. Lerps. Bell lerps. Have you met my bell lerp?. They're lovely and lerpful. They're lerptastic. Lerp lerp lerp lerp lerp. There's something wrong with me, isn't there?

Also, "lerp" is my new favorite animal name ever. It's so fun to say!

$14 a month is not that much but they should at least make the site readable.

ha ha ha. "mouth-watering crap hats.". i thought they were scale insects or mealy bugs at 1st. and the lerp miner i thought would be a type of leaf miner at 1st. but very interesting and clever way to traffic to your site. make obscure references that your site conveniently has the answers to.

I like it too without the knowledge of the bg story. The superhero vs. super villain with the helpless Bell Lerps as the innocents concept is great and they were all funny. And then there the link reveals what a Bell Lerp and a Bell Miner is and I go "I see". What a slow Bell Miner.

Yeah that Parasitica enjoying is hilarious too . The link is funny as well thank you for sharing. I also laugh hard because of the starfish stuff, it being the "relentless killing machine of the sea"
