Description

Torage was born under a waterfall. The sound of crashing water was the backdrop for her early development and made her a very energetic and joyful individual. She loved noise and would make it herself if needed. Sadly, when it came time for her to go out and make friends this noisiness didn't go over too well. Torage came across a group of fellow hatchling playing in a still pond and thought she would make an entrance, something that would energize everyone into some spontaneous play. She stealthily climbed atop some large stones that overlooked the pond, backed up to give herself some running room and dashed for the edge. She chirped happily as she dove off the rocks, tucking herself into a tight ball, and landed with a resounding SPLOOSH in the still water filled with surprised Bokkudo and Bettabo. She dropped deep while everyone else who was once in the pond flew high into the air, launched by Torage's mighty plummet. The other hatchlings who were lucky enough not to be on the water's surface during this event but were submerged watched in shock as a bright orange Draphibi drifted fast past them to the bottom.

Upon hitting ground with a soft "Thud" Torage swam back up to the surface to greet these new friends she had made an impression on and start the games. But as she broke through the water she saw all the other hatchlings swimming away. She chirped in confusion while the others shot her angry glances over their shoulders as they left the pond, and Torage was left alone, now realizing she had made a big mistake.

Here is the finished product! As stated on my thumbnails post I received some excellent compositional feedback from OwenStardust . They recommended that Torage do a canon ball that flings all the other hatchlings out of the water. It's a very energetic compositional direction and I loved it, it gave me so much instant inspiration! Torage is doing exactly what I used to do as a kid and then get yelled at for, it was perfect.

Other than the composition, I went with a simple painterly/crayon-like style that I have been practicing with other general art pieces. I want Torage's growth prompts to look exuberant and childish in contrast to Hush's clean dark inks and Bubbles' more blended almost shiny style.

I had also been a bit worried that having Torage be an annoyance in this narrative would be a bad idea and a sort of character assassination on her in the group itself, but I think it's appropriate to have the occasional story where a character needs to learn how to better themselves after a rough interaction with others.

I have nothing much else to say on the piece except that I had a lot of fun painting it and looking at it makes me smile, so I consider this a success!

EDIT: Tweaked and updated some aspects of the art I felt were lacking, such as adding in wings I forgot to add and changing the position of a tail fin.
