Description I wanted to write a clever title but I could not think of one. I am just happy I finished this.

I have been gone for a very long time from DA and I wanted to come back. I thought that I would finish up a illustration that I started like two months back. At the time I was trying to push myself to draw in color because that is lacking in my skill set. My previous color illustration that I finished was my wolf study. This time I wanted to push myself further by drawing in color from the start because with the wolf I went from grey scale and converted to color. I am not going to lie, as difficult as it was, I think I prefer drawing in color from scratch as appose to the conversion. It is very noticeable in the hair here compared to the wolf. The wolf does not look soft and fluffy like I wanted. Maybe, If I am struggling, I could do the conversions with faces and clothing but with hair, I think I need to do it in color from the start.

In a weirdly lucky way, I had some personal issues come up when I began this illustration. Issues that caused me to stop drawing for a while. But before the issues came up, I actually quite this illustration and decided to go the grey scale route ( this drawing was too confusing for me to handle). When I picked it back up recently, I completely forgot that I wanted to do that and continued in color. By the time I remembered, I had some kind of rhythm going so I did not want to stop...I am glad I did not. I have learnt some things, especially about my brush and when too use the soft edge vs hard and how that helps when drawing in color (this has to do with setting up your base of the drawing before putting details on). Plus for the first time I payed around with opacity of my brush (something I have been told about but did not use and I must say, it has quite a nice effect to it)

I am very happy with how it turned out and I really need to do a few more color portraits to start getting the hang of using color. The one thing I need to incorporate into my drawings more are custom brushes (I exclusively use the round brush and would like to know how to use other brushes to create textures).

Anyway...Yay!!!! I'm Back!!!

Thank you for the comment!! Yep I want to do the May challenge. I was thinking of doing the one on projecteducate. Previously I wanted to enter a competition but work got way to hectic at the time. Like I was working 12 hour shifts for a 2 week period in the time the Arcane Idol challenge happened. So I want to enter this one just for the fun of it.

Thank you so much!!!! Taking a break from artwork is something that I need to learn. Whenever I step away from something I am working on, the frustration of it usually makes me give up and leave it unfinished. I am happy I finished this one and I think it is definitely something that I can learn from. I also need to learn that struggling is not something to walk away from but something that needs to be overcome  Honestly fighting through it has made me feel that I have leveled up in some way   Thank you for the support!!!

Thank you!!!! I am more shocked that it is going to take the viewer count a while before it catches up to the fav count   I guess everyone is fav'ing the thumbnail without clicking. Still, it is nice that people like it!!!

Thank you!!!     Now to try and do the same thing with brushes...You know what I would like to do. Have you seen people do portraits of girls with freckles. I want to do a portrait and use brushes to show pores in skin and freckles on the face. Not sure how I am going to do that BUT it will be done

I'm using phone so pardon the lack of dA emojis 🤣

Hmm i don't think I know which portrait you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure I know what the general idea is. Paintable has a set of free brushes for skin drawing and hair too iirc. You could check his resources out.

Also I'd recommend looking at his tutorials for skin/portrait painting bc he teaches you how to utilize overlay and etc (which are essential effects that you have to familiarise yourself with when painting with color).

All the best!! I'm sure you can do it. 🙆🏻‍♀️

A really good example of the freckles: Morning Light  and a really extreme example of skin texture: Shiny
Would be nice to be able to achieve at least a good 40% of those amazing examples in my own work.   I can do it!!!

Thank you so much for the tips

Great job! The colors are great but what I really like and what makes it pop are the edges work and the fine mastering of values. All those master studies did pay off ; )

Thank you so much  I think I should change the title to reflect that it is a study and not from my imagination...I would be so amazed at myself if this was something I came up with , lol.

One of the reasons why I chose this image was to push myself with color and I am happy it worked out because color studies have been kicking my butt!!
