how would "weak" even be considered ableist? unless used deliberately against someone's physical ability

sighleil [2016-04-06 21:04:38 +0000 UTC]

well, some of those could be slurs if used against someone (especifically, crazy and insane), but not to describe something you like/dislike. and as for the others, these words will never be as bad as r*tard (yes, i censor the word, it's just a matter of respect towards myself and others).

so yeah, agree and disagree at once i like the stamp style though.

There's this blog called autisticchoya (I think?) that had a page on albeist slurs. Most of the words in the stamp were on that page.

Besides, I'm autistic, and the only thing I find "ableist" is self diagnosis and people who fetishize mental illness on tumblr.

Yes, I don't find the word "retard" ableist at all. (It's probably because I'm high functioning, and people that are high functioning can have high IQs.)

it's considered abelist because many people use it to describe something stupid, or slow, not an actual mentally retarded person. also, another autistic here lmao

Except they are, because they're literally using mental disorder and handicap symptoms as insults.

👍: 0 ⏩: 7

LadyTroodon In reply to eboiluv [2017-05-06 19:06:35 +0000 UTC]

NONE of those words are listed in the DSM-V (Diagnostic Standard Manual, the 5th and most recent edition), even to DESCRIBE the symptoms of mental disorders. Using those to DESCRIBE the symptoms of mental illnesses in any way, shape, or form is a sign of severely incompetent psychologist (news flash: your psychologist truly IS BAD, there is no "if" about it!). A good psychologist or psychiatrist who genuinely wants to help people will be careful to avoid hurting their patients' feelings.

If most people were REALLY using mental disorder and handicap symptoms as insults, those insults would sound very different from the list above.

And before you go saying that I could not possibly understand what you have gone through, let me tell you this:

I survived two years of abuse by a control freak high school psychologist who systematically took apart my self esteem (using actual brainwashing techniques), lied to my parents and the school about what she was doing, and kept a gigantic list of every mistake I made in public, manipulating school staff members to spy on me and give her more mistakes to put on her list. She deliberately worsened my anxiety disorder in order to weaken my psyche for her to play with. I only got out with my sanity because I was able to use art as an emotional outlet for how isolated she made me feel. I am still emotionally scarred from her so-called "treatment" years later. I get that being misunderstood, and treated like your thoughts and feelings don't matter at all HURTS.

Being called words like "stupid" is definitely insulting, and it always will be; it's an insult, and insults are by nature designed to, well, be insulting. Although it may feel like it, the words listed on the stamp aren't specifically targeted—EVERYONE has been called one of those words at some point. Maybe they seem like slurs to you because, due to the trauma you have gone through, they make you distressed because they bring back memories of abuse and bullying.

But when you say, "These things were originally made to describe them, and their casual use does not negate their meaning or their history", you are making what is called an etymological fallacy, to put it in academic terms. You are forgetting that the meaning of words can undergo significant change throughout their usage ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic… ). By your logic that the original meaning of a word should never be forgotten, modern people should feel offended when someone calls them "pretty", because it actually used to mean "deceitful" (I learned this in a linguistics class).

P.S. : I made an accidental triple post with this, which is why I hid my last two comments.

eboiluv In reply to frankier-o [2016-06-19 04:52:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes it does make him ableist.  Using low intelligence as an insult is inherently ableist, as it is saying that low intelligence is worthy of being an insult- which targets people with intellectual disabilities.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UndeadDoktor In reply to eboiluv [2016-01-05 00:33:06 +0000 UTC]

if youre going to worry about insults being offensive (because thats literally what theyre for) then go outside, take a walk and stay a few days without internet because you honestly are so fucking sensitive. instead of arguing with people saying the word "stupid", why dont you argue with ACTUAL ableists, the ones who say the word "retarded" or slap a limp hand against their chest to signify mental retardation? the ones who think being ADHD is cute or the ones who wish they were in a wheelchair? how about, hear me out, you stop fighting things that literally nobody is offended about?
how about you stop treating us like we're made of fucking glass? you think we're going to have a heart attack or kill ourselves because somebody said "wow thats so stupid!"? we arent children so stop treating us like we are. be productive for a change and fight real ableists, instead of just normal people who say "dumb" and "lame"?

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

eboiluv In reply to UndeadDoktor [2016-01-05 04:03:07 +0000 UTC]

Except i can actually do both. And just because you aren't offended doesn't mean there aren't people that are? People can be assholes all they want; i want those insults to not be rooted in ableism- and they ARE, due to the history behind these words.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UndeadDoktor In reply to eboiluv [2016-01-05 04:45:17 +0000 UTC]

just because ableism is rooted in it doesnt mean people use it in ableist ways. holy shiiit

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

eboiluv In reply to UndeadDoktor [2016-01-05 07:56:52 +0000 UTC]

Insulting people with "stupid" means they think low intelligence is an insult. People with low intelligence should not be used as an insult. Same goes for dumb. Psycho? Psychotic people should not be used as insults. Etc etc. It is ableism whether you want to adjust your vocabulary or not.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UndeadDoktor In reply to eboiluv [2016-01-05 12:11:37 +0000 UTC]

thats what insults are made for tho. im pretty sure all insults have some fucked up backstory.
nobody insulting you is trying to insult your mental illness or disability. again, stop treating mentally ill and disabled people like glass. i understand if youre offended by these words and thats fine, but don't go and say "SHHH STOP SAYING THESE BAD WORDS OR THE DISABLED WILL HEAR AND WANT TO KILL THEMSELVES!!!!" to people who use these words to describe something stupid.
this argument is getting incredibly boring. youre boring

GalvaEmperor In reply to UndeadDoktor [2016-05-03 22:08:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm disabled too and I outright hate the word "ableist" and the arguments supporting its use.

Is this the world we want to live in; where you're afaird to say anything because feelings might get bruised? Overly PC people think we're frail and need 24/7 protection, but we're sterner than that. Humor and human interaction should not suffer the whims of the overly sensitive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UndeadDoktor In reply to GalvaEmperor [2016-05-04 10:44:30 +0000 UTC]

In all honesty? You're right. People who complain about these words being ableist treat neurodivergent, disabled, and mentally ill people like fucking glass. They act like the moment we hear the word "dumb", we break down into tears and shit ourselves. THAT'S ableism. Treating us like we're fucking babies. I don't give a shit if they think they're "protecting" us. Just who do you think you're "protecting" by censoring people online? Or are you only covering our ears, saying "shhh dont say that theyre autistic you might hurt their frail feelings!!!" just for brownie points.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GalvaEmperor In reply to UndeadDoktor [2016-05-04 12:46:47 +0000 UTC]

If anything most disabled people are not glass. Having to live with a handicap tends to toughen you up to face the real world. If a people doesn't need to be babied, then by all mean they do NOT need to be babied.

SJWs and their social justice can go back to Tumblr for all I care. Good ol' DeviantART has enough problems without their whiny ass drama, all due to the fact that they didn't learn how to handle the hard facts of life. Comedy shouldn't suffer for SJW amusement and honestly, I feel like those SJW special snowflakes need some serious attitude adjustment.

I'm sick of seeing the word "ableist" since it's used to coddle people who are human beings like a stiff breeze would shatter them. We are not weak, we are stronger than words. After all sticks and stones can and will break your bones, but words can never hurt you. It's a kindergarten saying but dammit it still rings true!
