ah yes I always remember when my psychiatrist described my self-harm as:
-stupid
-dumb
-crazy
-batshit
-weak
-hysterical
-insane
-derpy
I've never forgotten my psychiatrist described my noise sensitivity as:
-stupid
-dumb
-crazy
-batshit
-weak
-hysterical
-insane
-derpy
And let's not forget the time my psychiatrist described my tendancy to avoid real-life socialization as:
-stupid
-dumb
-crazy
-batshit
-weak
-hysterical
-insane
-derpy
... Wait a minute. The answer is STILL 'no'.

You realize this isn't about *your* psychiatrist, it is about other psychiatrists, it is about society. I'm glad that /you/ have not had these experiences, but /I/ have, my friends have, my /family/ has.

I've been to several psychiatrists over the years. so have most of my friends. not one of our psychiatrists have said
-stupid
-dumb
-crazy
-batshit
-weak
-hysterical
-insane
-derpy
were symptoms or descriptions of symptoms. We're talking at least 15 psychiatrists. Have you stopped to think that maybe your psychiatrist is bad and in the minority?
"whoops i'm stupid" is not on the same discriminatory level as "you autistic fuck". They're barely comparable.
Get over yourself.

It's not getting over myself, though. It would be 'getting over' the abuse and discrimination that people face on a DAILY basis. People call me stupid, dumb and derpy as an insult; I have learning disabilities. People call me crazy, and insane as an insult; I have psychosis. People call me hysterical and batshit; I am severely bipolar.
These things are DESCRIPTIONS of the SYMPTOMS of mental illness and disorder. These things were originally made to describe them, and their casual use does not negate their meaning or their history.
Not to mention even if my psychiatrist was BAD- which they were, for using those terms the way they did- there are TONS of them. These words have become so casual, despite being so derogatory to disabled people, that even professionals use them casually and that is not okay. That is not uncommon; people talk about these things literally all the time, among other issues they've had with their psychiatrists.

And people call me those things too. But they're not based on mental illnesses that these passers-by do not know i have.
By your logic, alien would be a slur. It was used to antagonize me, to insult me. But I got over myself and managed to have a spine thicker than a goddamn twig.
They are NOT descriptions of symptoms of mental disabilities. No doctor I have been to has used
-stupid
-dumb
-crazy
-batshit
-weak
-hysterical
-insane
-derpy
as descriptions for one's mental health.
I am not rich nor do I come from a rich family. They have always been common and very rarely used to discriminate against someone for their mental disability. "Austistic" has been used more to discriminate against the mentally disabled, that doesn't make it a slur.
You're an oversensitive moron who has only proven my point; you need to get over yourself.

Growing a thicker spine doesn't make the n-word not a slur. Growing a thicker spine doesn't mean 'autistic' isn't a slur when it's used as one. The n-word isn't a slur when black people use it, but it is when white people use it because of the HISTORY of the word.
It's not like I'm the only person that feels this way, there are a TON of people that feel the same way as me. A ton of people that see these words for what they are; derogatory.

the N word has been used to actively enslave black people for hundreds of years. to justify killing them. to actively exclude them from doing things.
disabled people on the other hand? we have never been enslaved. the worst thing someone's done to us is call us a few nasty words based on our mental states. We have disabled parking spaces, disabled restrooms, disabled education units, the list goes on and on, and yet we're all still allowed to use the shit that able-bodied and neurotypical people use! we're pretty fucking privileged actually!
and there are a ton of people who think that censorship based on words such as:
-stupid
-dumb
-crazy
-batshit
-weak
-hysterical
-insane
-derpy
is oppressive, kills freedom of speech, and is in general not actually harmful.
n***** and n**** were actually used to enslave black people. actively used to kill black people. actively used to abuse them for hundreds upon hundreds of centuries.
stupid, dumb, etc. were not used to enslave us, not used to kill us (the only one that may have been used is insane), and have only been used in the past 100 years or so, more often than not to describe when an action was a really stupid decision (i.e reading a bomb defusing manual, the page stating "Cut the green wire" and you cut the red wire) rather than to actively discriminate against the disabled. Autistic is the word that fills that criteria. Retard is the word that fills that criteria.
You're a moron. No other way of putting it. You could be perfectly fine in the head and I would still think that this is all a giant exercise in stupidity.

"the worst thing someone's done to us is call us a few nasty words based on our mental states."
Oh yeah, the high rates of abuse towards us, the locking us in abusive institutes, the rapes, current, ongoing-murders and the fucking targeting during the holocaust, all that? That's nothing, water under the bridge. And the special education system that is literally screwed all to hell? That's nothing too! Not a problem, we're not treated badly.
Mentally disabled people are CONSTANTLY subjected to abuse, at. these. words. They are called these words as SLURS, they are used to target their disabilities and illnesses. The fact that they are casual use does NOT negate the history, does NOT negate the original meaning and does NOT negate the way they are used against us.
You can pretend all you want so that you don't have to alter your language, but they are wrong. They are used in ableist ways, they are used to target us, and you can't erase history and you can't erase the present.

axris In reply to eboiluv [2015-12-22 04:52:47 +0000 UTC]
Locking us up in institutes is a last-resort thing, for when we're too fucking dangerous to go out in public! The general population has a right to safety just as much as we do! We are not perfect little fucking angels that can't do wrong!
It's not as fucking constant as you think. We have as many pros as we do cons to this bullshit. Disabled bathrooms, disabled parking spaces, we get fucktons of compensation for being disabled- there are even funds and scholarships based on just being disabled. I got out of doing half my goddamn TAFE course because I was disabled. Lower-class, gay, non-white, and trans people do not get these benefits we do. So we're the only 'oppressed' group that actually gets a decent amount of compensation for our disabilities!
Autistic is used in ableist ways far more often than "stupid". "You stupid fuck" is used to refer to an act that lacks intelligence; and we're one of the most intelligent species on earth. It's called Darwin's Theory of evolution for a reason; stupid, weak, or otherwise inferior species die out.
The high rates of abuse, rape, and murder do not just apply to us, and do you honestly think that saying "ok these words are bad because they're offensive to extremely sensitive people uwu" is going to fix it? That it'll magically cause the abuse, rape, and murder to vanish? That it'll even contribute a little?!
The answers to these questions are: No, No, and No.
This kills freedom of speech and the words are not offensive in the same way n***** and n**** are. They have several other fucking meanings before the ableist ones, while those slurs? They have one meaning!
God, my mother's just like you. I really hope that my mental disabilities don't dissolve to the point where I only care about myself.

The term has evolved to be used along with the action of hitting your limp-wristed hand against your chest, and saying 'herpy derp', and mocking the mentally impaired or disabled. It is used to symbolize a mentally disabled person. Yes, it is ableist.

That's why the character Derpy Hooves in mlp was so offensive; the term was used as her name, she was given the voice of a person with Down's Syndrome AND she was given crossed-eyes, which is another way that people have ALWAYS shown mentally disabled people.
