Description On September 26th, 2016, the last living Rabbs Treefrog named Toughie, died. He was the only known survivor of his species.

The Rabbs' Fringe Limbed Treefrogs are now extinct.

Toughie was captured in Panama and brought into captivity in 2005. His age was unknown, but scientists at the time deduced that he was about 12 years old. He was one of several dozen tadpoles and frogs taken to the US in a conservation effort against a deadly fungus that was wiping them out (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis).

Toughie lived at the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Georgia. He became a father to many tadpoles in captivity, but none survived. After the last female died, he was one of two males that were left. The other male had to be euthanized on February 17th, 2012 due to health problems.

On December 15, 2014, Toughie was recorded vocalizing again - for the first time since 2005. His call was never answered.

He made a debut on the Discovery documentary, Racing Extinction in 2015.

Though Toughie's species is considered a very elusive kind of frog, no one has seen another of his kind in the wild. But the hope is there are still Rabbs' frogs out there, but the chances of this being true are dwindling into the single digits as scientists exhaust themselves trying to find these frogs.

Toughie will be missed. He was a beloved ambassador and representation of his kind, but sadly our attempts to save his species were in vain. Researchers have collected DNA and other samples from his body to hopefully one day bring the species back to life.
