Felt like posting a photo of this lovely little man~I actually took this picture on my phone sometime I think in June? Anyways, I saw him just hanging onto an oak tree I often visit, and I never would have seen him had he not fluttered his wings!
He is the largest moth I have seen alive and in the wild, and thanks to Instagram, I now know he is a Antheraea Polyphemus Moth, also known as the Polyphemus Silkmoth. Now I am guessing he is male because of the volume of the plumose antennae - males typically have thicker and fluffier plumage to catch phermones from females, but I could be wrong at his gender.
Isn't he gorgeous?! UGH, his collar was just so fluffy, and he had the softest looking fuzz on his metasoma and legs! And those antennae...so feathery...!
Ahem, anyways~ He was an excellent model for some unplanned photography. He even spread his wings for me for some nice shots! But this one is the best!
He's probably long gone now, but I often think about him and his lovely wings, and the peaceful atmosphere I found him in.

Width-wise, yes! He was quite large, maybe from the tip of my middle finder to the top of my wrist, wing tip to wing tip.

Your Moppet is a Antheraea polyphemus! Probably a fairly young one, or the hybrid genes (this species is a hybrid!) emphasized some of its colors. And it looks like it might be a girl!

I have a different picture, taken from another angle, that shows he has these huge fluffy antenna. So... if he is actually a she, the males must have feather dusters for head bling.
