Let the wide-eyed realization of "oh my God it makes no sense and yet it makes so much sense at the same time" begin!

I now give you the simplest explanation possible for each of these, because chances are this may not even be fully read, and I don't wanna waste your time, bros! I talk a lot.

Clothes and fashion
Because I like to draw multiple outfits. I have been doing this since very young, I could never make a character without attaching a wardrobe. Despite dressing like a dingy hermit most of the time myself, I'm actually very concerned with styling.

Dark Horse comics
They have some of my favorite characters and plotlines of all time.

Disney animation
I remember watching the opening to Beauty and the Beast in the theater and thinking "I have to be an artist."

Bruce Campbell
Enough said.

Molly Grue
When I was very very young, I rented The Last Unicorn for 8 consecutive video store trips and eerily identified with her tearful rage at the unicorn more than any four year old really should. I think few characters have had as big an impact on my sensibilities.

Pin-up Art
Like you needed to be told.

Grunge / 90's aesthetic
Hey bro, I like the 80's, but I got love for the 90's too. Specifically all those ripped up jeans and sneakers and strange-ass music. It was a good time to be alive!

X-Men
Man, do you remember the cartoon? Do you remember how cool they were when we were 9?? I have this poster hanging above my computer because I love the tiny insignificant addition of Mr. Sinister back there like "hey seriously I'm important guys look HANDS ON HIPS!" Additionally, going to see the first movie was the only time I cut school.

Don Bluth
There is something about the overall look of his work - the strong lines and simple shapes - that really really appeals to me. Overall I prefer it by far to Disney. It could also be that I love an underdog.

80's cartoons
I picked Jem for the big picture because I knew most of you would " I already knew dat dawg" but I would like to also direct you to my love of Thundercats, The Real Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Voltron, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Final Fantasy franchise
I specifically put IV (lovingly labeled as II on these American shores!) because it was the first one I played and proceeded to absolutely obsess forever over the characters. It also introduced me to Yoshitaka Amano and caused for a lot of copying outfits out of instruction manuals and growing to love dialogue more than any other specific writing tool.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
When you listen to as much Nick Cave as I do, you are bound to be a little inspired. He's so dark and romantic and terrible and innovative and sounds like he ate a bass guitar and washed it down with whiskey.

Ralph Bakshi's Wizards
"Fritz? Fritz, get up for God's sake, get up! ... THEY KILLED FRITZ! THEY KILLED FRITZ! Those lousy, stinkin' yellow fairies...!!"

It is definitely fun to see! The best is when you look at their work and you can see it, and it's like "Oooohhh! I get it."

Don't suppose you listen to Tom Waits too? I gave Nick Cave a try there, he's damn good and reminds me of Waits.

I do listen to a little Tom Waits! I don't listen to him as much as Cave, though, I find his stuff to be hit or miss. They are definitely the same vein of music, I'd say! c:

You're right with the hit and miss thing. I got 3 of his albums, loved 2 and hated 1. I like how they both kind of, experiment, with their music.

Hell yes Don Bluth. Even though um Cornelius and Dmitri look exactly the same just with different hair. XD

Sephiramy In reply to ayuICHI [2010-09-08 18:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I don't find that Don Bluth integrates much stylization when it comes to the men... they have like ERAS of time where they all look the same. XD

BUT, that being said, I think he does some adorable females and I love how he illustrates mannerisms.

RoCueto [2010-08-23 03:30:29 +0000 UTC]

I've always considered Bluth and Disney to be the alpha of animation, by far above Ghibli, WB and Nickelodeon whom are still one step down in the awesomestair.

But for some reason a lot of kids can't appreciate old Disney and Bluth's movies and that makes me so sad

JEM rules btw, love glam

Clothes and fashion - Always needed!

Dark Horse comics - Hell yeah!

Disney animation - I love old Disney like Mousterpiece Theatre, or oooo Robin Hood!

Bruce Campbell - Yes...enough said for his epicness..

Molly Grue - Something about these old movies like Last Unicorn or Flight of Dragons is very special

Pin-up Art - Very lovely

Grunge / 90's aesthetic -

X-Men - I remember hearing the intro and racing to the tv lol.

Don Bluth - Everything he does just looks so smooth and simple, wish there was more!

80's cartoons - The one thing to get me out of my funks, pop in an 80s dvd and its all good.

FF franchise - The clothes, monsters, storyline, its all epic! And if one of those sucks, the rest make up for it.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - again...

Ralph Bakshi's Wizards - I haven't had a chance to see Wizards yet, but I loved Raplh films before I even knew who he was as a kid. I fell in love with Cool World, Hey Good Lookin', LOTR, and Fritz the Cat! Of course I would sneak out and watch them late at night in the living room, but they were all worth it!

Phantosanucca [2010-08-22 18:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Molly Grue confronting that Unicorn about her wasted innocence was indeed the best part of that movie.

And Final Fantasy IV pretty much started it all for me too. Everything I have wanted to do, tell a story, create characters, play and/or devise video games, all of that artistic crap began around the same time I had just finished kicking Zeromus' ass.

OMG KAIN

Interesting meme. I'd give it a go if I thought I had anything even vaguely approaching a style.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoCueto In reply to Phantosanucca [2010-08-23 03:35:37 +0000 UTC]

You don't need a style to be inspired and influenced

Shit you don't even need a style to do art, take a srtoll thru art history and you'll see most if not all great artists were pretty flexible. Style defining us is a construct of consummerism and it hurts more than it helps, just look at how often Madureira gets to draw comics.

Bet you had fun, and dude it's not like you suck at art or something, you obviously know what you're doing. Fuck style, draw how you want to draw and you'll find your natural technique

IS ANYONE SURPRISED!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

heysawbones In reply to Sephiramy [2010-08-22 17:25:41 +0000 UTC]

INITIALLY, I WAS! Illustration is still a male-dominated field, and was even moreso in the 80s. The work is at a high level of detail and isn't particularly abstract, which are qualities in illustration that female illustrators are not OFTEN sought out for.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sephiramy In reply to heysawbones [2010-08-22 17:31:14 +0000 UTC]

Well this illustrator was clearly a Jem girl and truly truly truly outrageous. But on a more serious note, I think using this as a big inspiration block makes it even more applicable being that, on some teensy insignificant level, I'd like to break some barriers for females as they are represented in the comic world. Specifically female characters, as you know. What better parallel than a real life example of a female artist going against the grain, eh? C:

heysawbones In reply to Sephiramy [2010-08-22 17:43:28 +0000 UTC]

and thank you! technically they fall under the category of 80's - 90's animation but they were such strong influences I felt they deserved squares of their own!

Sephiramy In reply to Nyx--Nyx [2010-08-22 17:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Man, the actual animation and look of Anastasia sure was beautiful! *u* My personal favorite of his is a tough choice between All Dogs Go to Heaven and Titan A.E. Lots of people give Titan A.E. shit but get off my jock geez!

I think he approaches children's animation from an interesting point of view, but mostly I'm in love with him stylistically.

Ahh, I love those ones too~~ ;u;
