The two grounds, the text in the back and the bird and trees in the front...I don't remember if I saw you explaining why you do this with your works, having two different grounds, but could you tell me? It makes me think of dreams overlaying or underlaying (depending on which is the dream, the print or the paint) conscious thought, or a stream of consciousness occurring when one is going about their everyday business...

I appreciate your interest. I don't always feel successful when explaining some of the ideas involved, so bear with me.
The description of overlaying dreams and streaming consciousnesses are two great ways to describe some of what is going on in the image. In addition, I am trying to portray and translate what is envisioned in my head coupled with a thought, idea or message.Β
The text seen in the images I make is always involved in some way with the intention of the artwork but not always directly. What I mean is the text could be a bridge linking thoughts or ideas, be the subject or the text could be simply a textural aspect to the piece.
The subjects, like the bird and the trees, are almost always more than their figurative being (more than a bird, more than a tree). They are symbolic in themselves, in color, in number, in placement and arrangement. There is no place, no time. The emphasis is on an idea, a thought, an emotion, etc. and all the elements in the artwork are intended to "speak" and reinforce the said emphasis.
I hoped this answered your question. If I did not answer your question or if you have another, let me know.Β

Yes, that makes sense to me. Do you leave it to the viewer to make their own interpretation of the symbols, such as the numbers, what the bird means, etc., or do you have an artist statement detailing each one? If it's something that you keep private then please don't tell me, I know sometimes there are things in my own work which I never explain, or that I explain to only certain people.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you!

I am open to the viewer's interpretation of my artwork, something I have learned to accept over the years. The symbols have a universal meaning, like sacred geometry, but are couple with personal iconography.Β
Here are a few de scripting of symbol meaning:
The Bird: transcendence; the soul; the spirit; spirits of the dead; ability to communicate with the gods or to enter a higher state of consciousness.
Three: Multiplicity; growth; The "power of three" is universal and is the tripartite nature of the world as heaven, earth, and waters; it is man as body, soul, and spirit; birth, life and death; beginning, middle, and end; past, present and future. Three is a 'heavenly' number representing the soul as four is the body.
The Circle: Wholeness; roundness is sacred as the most natural shape (atoms, bubbles, planets); the infinite, eternity; all thing cyclic; recurrence; rebirth; resurrection. Shares symbolism with the Sun and Moon and their attributes.Β
Color even has meaning in artwork but I won't go into it at this time.Β
I was fortunate to be able and go back to finish school. During my time there, I took a couple classes with Dr. Scotti Foss (an art history and a speech/oral representation class). I knew there was symbolism to artwork but she opened my eyes to so much more expanding my ideas and how to get my messages across to the viewer.
A great book to have, if you can find it, is J.C. COOPER's AN ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TRADITIONAL SYMBOLS, copyright 1978 Thames & Hudson Ltd., London.Β

Thank you! That sheds a lot of light onto your work, andΒ I really appreciate your taking the time to set that out for me. I'm so sorry it took me this long to reply; life with a 7-month-old is very full and busy. I don't get onto deviantart much these days.
I have found that crossing disciplines with art yields more in-depth and rewarding results as well. Speech and presentation sound like a great way to augment your visual language. Heh, although when I took a speech class in college, I was only to glad to get the requirement over with. I think if I could read up on it that would be useful. Also, thank you for the book reference.
