“What is that HORRIBLE noise” said annoyed the drow, rolling in her bed. And it was so light outside. Other reason for hating to live in the surface. Normally, by this hour of the day she was either completely out sleeping, or bumbling back from a party with the girls after a wild morning drinking.

“It must be some birds!” a voice said helpful, deep in the light where she couldn’t see her. Her surface elf slave.

“Birds?”

“Yes, Mistress, when you have a house on the surface sometimes little birds will make nests under the eaves and it’s just so adorable and…” said excited the elf slave.

The drow girl sat down in her bed, her eyes trying to adjust to all that horrible light., as the elf continue to talk. She knew birds. She had seen birds, in the parks down in the city. Yeah, she would admit the birds don’t actually bother her. They’re fun. They’re somewhat put out that she was trying to sleep there, but they’re fun.

She walked to the window, opening it… to see a set of eager harpy faces peering back at her.

With daggers in her eyes, the drow turned to her surface elf slave. “Adorable and Little you were saying?!”

She looked down to the Harpy nest. The little harpies chirped happy, begging to the drow for something. Their mother wasn’t that happy, it would seem.

“What the hell are you doing there?! This is a private property!” the drow demanded to know, as she well knew that in the City of the Wicked of the Zaghäl, even if just a student of magic, she was a superior to any non-dark elf and any non-demon.

“What do you think I’m doing?! I’m trying to raise a family, here!” answered the Harpy with a coarse voice –unlike of the one of her chicks. It so often happened with Harpies: they had either the voices of angels or demons-.

“You will NOT nest outside of my window!!”

“I’m a veteran! I have fought in the Wars of the Dark Elf King! I demand some respect!”

“You can’t just nest anywhere you like!”

“Who says that?!”

“The City Charter! The City Council! The Dark Elf King! So go and nest in the Harpy’s perch, and get lost!” the drow barked annoyed.

“YOU try to hatch some eggs so close to so many little grey orcs grabby hands!!” the Harpy cackled back. “And as I’m outside of the city, these rules clearly doesn’t! So YOU go to the Harpy’s perch, and jump down from it!”

“I’m trying to study here! To be a Warmage, you know?! Your natural superior and better?!! It’s the middle of the day! It’s sleeping time, for all civilized people around!”

“Well, you aren’t the only one upset here! I was told, there would be food here!”

“…what?”

She saw at the chirping harpy chicks. Then she remembered. Last year, a lost little harpy had landed in her open window, and she had given her some bread crumbs, before setting her go.

“Curses!”

“Really? Harpies, on your window?” asked incredulous one of her friends of the academy.

“Are you sure they aren’t birds on the walls, instead?” other of her friends suggested helpful.

“Pretty sure. Harpies are not hard to spot. With their puzzled expressions, their leggings and the way they try and mug you for food.

The worst thing if is you do give in and help feed their squeaking brats, they just show up again next year because obviously your house is a good nesting spot.

I’m desperate to get rid of them! Any idea?”

“I don’t know. I for sure have my share of experience with Harpies. The Harpies nesting outside of my window are the ones whose brats won’t shut up even if I stand within two feet of their nest, and some sort of small harpy nesting in a flowerpot by the front door who is not very brith and likes to fly through the shed whenever I leave it open.”

“Nesting in a flowerpot?”

“Rather large flowerpot, small harpy, but still I consider it a feat. Anyway, both sets of harpies have been here before. Flowerpot harpy, I forgot she likes that pot and poured some water on her head. So she rebuilt this year’s nest with a little roof. Which is smart for a Harpy, I guess”.

“I think we have it better than in other parts. I have heard from a cousin living in a small city in the surface, to the west –Khar-bad or something, I think- that harpies are still smiling eagerly, but they all have knives. And  they compete for space with the infestation of ozcurillas in the shed.”

“An infestation of little grey orcs?!” her friends asked incredulous.

“This is why you have to fill your shed with stuff, if you go around leaving sheltered places unfilled you’re going to get ozcurillas in there!”

Based on a conversation with in Discord, who's having troubles with birds. I asked him if it wasn't with harpies for sure, and came a very amusing discussion, and the idea for this drawing.

LOL, fantasy problems. The way the kids' have that open-mouth "feed me!" of baby birds is, with a human face, really quite disturbing!

I would be tickled to death to find that and would probably start dropping them food now and then so long as they "stabby-stabby" anyone who tries to climb in my window. That situation would just be to darn cute.

Harpies must not have any fear of heights.  Better, not, as flying is what they do.  I'm certainly cringing looking at this.

Birds, being so small and light can depend on their nests holding up, even if partially suspended in midair.

For all the humor, this really shoved the ideas and origins of harpies foremost in my mind.  Dungeons and Dragons 4th ed. suggested that harpies were elves who by misuse of shape-shifting magic or punishment became harpies, that made a lot of sense to me, even if the precise mechanism and situation was left in the realms of imagination and legends.

It's sort of hard to see how harpies could have evolved; they are radically different from the griffin people they are supposed to be most closely resembling.  Very different faces and heads, tetrapods vs, hexapods and so on.  I'd have to imagine that they came about either as a demon race or else as a result of the world builders.

Then again, ALL, or nearly all, the native races came about as a result of the world builders.  Perhaps other worlds in Ots have, or had, harpies and other beast-folk?

The power of harpies' instincts really impressed me here; as if their nesting actions are powerfully compelled even if adaptable, such as building a nest with a roof.

Look, if you're clever you can turn this to your advantage.  Harpies make great messengers if you can keep them on task, and you won't have to worry about rivals or assassins sneaking in that way!

The nest is half in the air.
Doesn't matter if they are harpys.
This can't be healthy. Oh my demongod!

The nest needs to be moved.

That Drow is lucky she only has a nest of Harpies on her windowsill, it could just as easily be a nest of little stray FIRE dragons!

Any idea of the mayhem they can cause?
Pouring water on them is NOT going to help you... don't even try!

Nice balancing act by the way, did that Harpy GLUE her nest to that sill?

There are birds that can make a crude version of concrete for their nests, with mud and their saliva (I think it were Swallows? I'm no Ornitholohist...).
Just imagine what a Harpy that's roughly Human in terms of intelligence can do!
