Description
"Thousands of years ago, in the primal age long lost, the world was overflowing with natural energy. Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre fought over that energy in endless, furious clashes."[On Tumblr]
(Here is a little comparison between my older and more recent work.)
The promised pair for Dragon Ascent.
I have been anxiously waiting to get this one done and to complete the set. Well, not waiting, working. This piece was a lot of work and it was mostly very enjoyable. Not counting the last part, which was over an hour of editing the scan. I don't think I have ever struggled so much with editing a scan. Typically it takes me about 5-10 minutes to do it, but this one, oh no, not going to let me go so easily. It was mostly due to my scanners terrible disagreement with all yellow, orange and red colours, it just makes complete mush of them so I have to spend a lot of time and effort to make it look like in the original. This one is still slightly off, only slightly, but it is the best I could do.
A little background for this. Whenever I do Pokemon fanart inspired by the traditional Japanese art I do a lot of research on how things are portrayed and executed in the art. For this one my challenge was to find a way to portray not only Groudon but Kyogre as well. Rayquaza was fairly easy since its a serpentine dragon, which are a common subject.
Now, I know Bulbapedia says Kyogre is likely to be based on an orca, and a lot of you may agree, but for this one I only found whales in Japanese art, nothing orca-like, so I made the decision to portray Kyogre more like a whale here.
As for Groudon, it was more difficult. Based on a behemoth with more dinosaurian figure I just had to mix and match pieces of different creatures; dragons, oni, whatever I might find suitable. And I was actually positively surprised by the result!
Overall I'm very happy with how this turned out. I hope deviantART doesn't turn the picture too dark, I fear it might do that.
I will be selling prints of this and Dragon Ascent in Tracon X next weekend!
I hope you like it!

Beautifully done, with the Japanese style applied into this painting, and it's believable to see Kyogre as a whale and Groudon as a behemoth/dinosaur(?) here. Excellent as always~!

Thank you very much! Groudon was a bit difficult since there weren't any clear lines for that so I mixed and matched it with different dragons and beasts I found.

This sure is well done! Groudon especially, I think. You've made it truly look like a great, deadly kaiju, and that ferocious snarl and "come at me" raised claws make this thing look seriously ready for a fight! I love how you turned those glowing depressions in its armour into outright flames/bursts of lava coming from it, and even made its tongue the same bright orange so it looks as if this thing's filled to bursting with lava (and it's got a literal tongue of flame, ha ha ha). And then the way you drew its cheek spikes to look like eruptions blasting out of its damn face... Wowee, you've made groudon look cool. And totally fitting in the style as well!
Kyogre doesn't look too happy to be in this fight, though then again, being the pokémon of constant downpours, I guess you can't blame it for being on the gloomy side. I think my favourite thing about it is the way you made its orange markings look like barnacles on its back, and it's neat how you gave it that wavy pattern between its white belly and blue top to make its whole face kind of look like a wave hitting the shore. And then of course there's those classic Wave Off Kanagawa-style waves you drew in the water it's in.
Excellent work! You've put these two together nicely!

Thank you very much! I really tried to put some effort into researching ways to portray these two as accurately as possible in this style. Groudon was the more difficult one due to the lack of a clear reference on how to portray such creatures in this kind of style but with a bit of mix and match I think ended up with a good solution.

I loooooove this! Ukiyo-e is one of my favorite styles, and I really like how Groudon looks like a composite of Asian mythological beasts (the lionlike face especially, since that shows up on a lot of creatures). Can't go wrong with crashing waves, either.

Thank you very much! That beast look appears in a lot of places and it felt somewhat universal to me so I used it one Groudon. :>

Did I miss this? I feel bad this flew right past my radar.
If I haven't said it, this is fantastic. The eye moves from PK to PG and back again...and once again you've pulled off that traditional Japanese look believably. Very well done.

Syystä tai toisesta Groudonin pää toi heti ensimmäisenä mieleen muinaiset kiinalaiset leijonaa esittävät patsaat ja maalaukset (nehän näyttivät ihan koirilta).
Musteet ovat näköjään loistava väritystapa perinteisessä taiteessa, koska sillä näyttää saavan hyvin vahvoja ja selkeitä värejä aikaiseksi. Pidän todellakin tämän työn voimakkaista väreistä, ne sopivat hyvin tuohon "meri ja maa kohtaa" teemaan.

Kiitos oikein paljon! Groudonin pää on tosiaan saanut inspiraationsa niistä leijonapatsaista.
