Good tutorial! I took some ideas from this and mixed a couple other additions but here's my outcome:

I know the render doesn't really work out as well with the method but I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

Its really not all that bad
suffers from a bit of ill lighting effects
weird border and like you said the render doesn't really seem to go with the style thnx for posting your outcome though
