Description
An Atreides ornithopter is readied for a patrol under the blazing sun on Arrakeen.I've been trying to come up with a more original concept for an ornithopter from the Dune universe. My design isn't moved about by the wings, but rather the wing's geometry changes, as it is composed of a multitude of flight surfaces that adapt to the needed aerofoil configuration for flight, hovering or different maneuvers. This makes the ornithopter extremely maneuverable.

This is honestly in my opinion, the best interpretation of it. You blend the mechanical and organic elements of it well, creating a fantastic looking machine.

Thank you! I just tried something slightly different from what I'd seen before.

I like this design interpretation. For me its more near to what I imagined when I red in the book. Maybe a little too much like today's jet fighters in the front part.
In the movie it was not well done, but they had technical limitations and in the miniseries it was more of a copy of the movie. In Westwood's Dune 2 game the Ornithopter was more in line with the book, tho flapping, long wings was not very realistic

Yeah, I totally agree with you on the different looks to the ornithopter. And the game's flapping wings were a little painful to see in action. XD

Mine too! And I love the fact that there are so many interpretations of it.

The miniseries had them looking like flies, the old Westwood games had them looking like dragonflies, and I'd even seen one interpretation where they resembled Russian Hind helicopters.

Yup. It's cool that there's enough room to play around.

Oh, nice! I like You took shape a bit from soviet gunship Mi24 and A10 warthog, those are truly elegant and mean combat machines!
And the idea with the wings is great, I guess it could look just like a dragonfly when moving - just watch how the nature does it, I like!

You got it, except that the wings move according to what maneuvers the craft does, they're not technically fluttering about. It was a lot of fun!

Nice realization of this machine. Nice to see the wings used as navigation and stability as opposed to the movie where they just omitted the wings.
Great job on this piece!

No problem, the design is really great! I had just started Re-reading Dune, and been trying to picture the machines in it.
