Never look back. Always keep running. That is the herd way. If you fall, you'll be remembered, but we will never look back.

The last words Raven was ever told by her birth herd repeated over and over in her head throughout her young life, and they cut deeper and deeper the older she got. They were plagued by human hunters, slowly picked off one by one, even when they fled from forest to forest. It was no wonder that as a calf, Raven had no chance of keeping up with the sudden fleeing, being left behind by her parents, her family, after she tired from running and grew lost in the snowy abyss. She had been frightened, confused and alone, with no one to guide her or protect her. It was a miracle she wasn't picked off by some hungry lynx, though the lack of food soon put her on deaths door.

However upon being blessed by Yggdrasil and Odin , two ravens were given the task of nursing her to health, and ensuring she lived. She called them Opal and Onyx, and learned how they talked, so she could communicate with them also, though other birds were still a mystery to her.

Raven was always thankful for her second chance, and knew she was to grow strong and prove that she was worth saving, her ravens never far from her side as she adventured, however the words never left.

Did they still think of her? Did they miss her? Were they even alive? She didn't know the answers, and the gods were quiet upon her questions. Perhaps it was a poetic sense... Never look back, keep moving forward, be stronger and embrace the chance at life you've been given. Raven tried to press on herself that that's what it meant, but she knew it was false... it simply meant if you fell when running from death, the herd would not stop to help you. Only keep going, and leave you to perish.

Raven understood the survival need of why it had to happen, even if she was the one that had been left behind.. though she had wished it hadn't been so easy for the herd to do so.

Becoming a mother for the first time practically changed Raven's world. She loved and adored her children beyond anything she could imagine. Her second calling, she knew she was born to be a mother and help calves learn the world. Her herd was small, composed of her children, and one of her calfhood friends and his children. A more simple way to live, and it suited her, going on adventures with her family and relishing in the fact she could protect them.

However on a small trip to the plains with her young daughters R-1170 Kite and R-1198 Blackbird , the gods would clearly have another idea of how things were to be. An unattended hunters fire sparked onto the dry leaves and wood surrounding it, soon developing into a fierce forest fire that would threaten to consume everything and everyone in its path. Raven could smell the smoke before she saw the fire, and quickly ushered her daughters through the forest paths to find the closest way out.

Despite the early action, it proved useless, and soon they were surrounded by flames and falling trees, heat and smoke suffocating them, infecting their lungs and making it hard to see past watery eyes.

Still, Raven urged on her daughters, running as fast as she dare, though never taking her eyes off her daughters. She would not lose them. Not like she had been lost once.

As a small break in the flames appeared ahead and she urged them on, the old words of her herd started to play again, repeating like a dreaded curse in her head.

Never look back. Always keep running. That is the herd way. If you fall, you'll be remembered, but we will never look back.

Raven knew in that moment it was not her way. She would look back.

And when she did, she saw another calf running behind them, trying to keep up, though starting to struggle from the sheer effort of fighting for his life. She didn't know where he had appeared from, or how he had found them, but she would not leave him behind, she would not leave him to the flames like she was left to the hunters.

She urged him on with her daughters, keeping them together until they broke free of the heat and smoke with her ravens as their guide, though still running out into the plains toward their home, taking the new calf and never stopping until they were safe. That mere couple of moments had given Raven all the clarity she needed however, and she knew one thing was for certain.

She would always look back.

AHH I'm so fricking proud of this <3 It's not perfect but I've wanted to draw this piece for quite a while and push more of Ravens development out there <3 She struggles early on in life, but with Opal and Onyx to help her through life, she is determined to do the same for others. She will go on to adopt other calves, and take in those that have no home, though this image is the start of it all. She already has a few children of her own, though Jay is the first calf she adopts after he loses his family in the panic of the fire.

It turns out his mother is Alma and she didn't die (Obvs XD), but Raven will go on to battle Alma, the pair unknowing until Alma recognises her long lost son.

More calves will come, and each have their part to play in her life, but she will never leave any of them behind, and that's her promise to them all.

She'll eventually have more confrontational lore with R-1149 Vanagandr , who is associated with Fenrir. And considering Ravens main god is Odin, we all know that ends super well between the Gods XD But they'll have a strange twisting relationship as they grow. They've already had their first confrontation here: The Red Wolf :: Raven : Brennon : Vanagandr , and it only really gets worse and more complicated from there.
