Description

Mass - 60 Tons

Max Speed - 64kph

Crew - 4

Although comparatively new and well-armed, the Ishtar wheeled tank had significant flaws. Its oversized wheels were fire magnets and easily damaged, the short profile also resulted in a very tall tank with a great deal of pressure being placed on the main wheels and the small ‘trolley’ wheels at the back which steered the vehicle. This made the Ishtar very easy to bog down on soft or rough terrain and when crossing rough terrain it was also quite unstable and during training exercises more than a few Ishtar’s toppled over.

The principle of the vehicle itself was sound, but a newer design was needed. In March 3028 the Scientists of Clan Hell’s Horses began the project to replace the Ishtar with the simply named Ishtar II. The vehicles would share as many parts as possible including the same electronics and communications systems but there were several major differences. First, the Ishtar II was a 6x6 vehicle with each tire mounted on an independent suspension arm and was in some ways similar to the smaller Polemos APC’s suspension system.

The vehicle’s fusion engine was also replaced with a fuel cell and would be one of the largest of its type in Clan space. Like all Hell’s Horses fuel cells though, the BV-240 was fuel hungry, giving the tank a rather short range, forcing the crew to carry extra water to refill the fuel cells in the field if needed and when running at the tanks full speed of 64 kph this became a necessity.

Have you and MattPlogg ever considered commissioning a studio like SteelWarriors to make these great vehicles into actual miniatures for the game?

Then maybe coordinate with MattPlog to maybe reach out to other BT fans and get a collection going.

So I went ahead and did my thing, AKA checking all the math to make sure shit lines up. I also took the liberty of plugging an XL Fusion into this thing because, why not. The Hells Horses would do it. So that all said, with a 6 ton XL 240, 6 ton standard frame, 8.5 tons of Ferro Fib armor which is like 10 tons of protection or so we come to 20.5 tons. Still with me? Good ok, then we add the weapons. A whole 12 tons for the main gun, 6 tons for the LRM-20 (Art 4 weight included there) and 1.5 tons for the machine guns. Plus 4 tons of shells for the LB-X20, 2 tons of LRMs for the launcher giving it 24 racks (going by MWO's count per ton anyway), and 2 tons for the MGs to share around. Add 10 heatsinks to ensure max cooling potential and you come to.....58 tons.

58 tons....2 whole tons shy. Which ironically, is exactly what the original Ishtar has. All of its gear brings it to 63 out of its 65 tons (if you use an XL 220, not a 110 like it says on Sarna). So that's 2 whole tons more you could use for ammo or, the smarter thing to do, 2 ER Medium Lasers, in case you wanna toss a Fusion engine into it like I did. Food for thought. I will probably draw up some alt variants in my spare time.

I'll let you in on a lil secret, she's not got an XL engine With any luck the book she's in will be out within the next week or two, and then you'll see

Yeah Shar I know, she's got a fuel cell. I did actually read. But for the sake of calculations, since I don't know the weight of fuel cells or ICE and I have a Fusion engine chart on hand I used that. Plus it works in my favor, because I can come up with personal variants that way.

Interesting. You don't see enough good wheeled AFVs in Battletech IMO. My only critique is the turret is a bit to big but that's just me.

Ultra 20 backed by LRM 20 with Artemis IV - those small pods are a pair of micro lasers or single machine guns?
You don't have infantry compartment don't you?

Look the LRM20 seems to be able to fold to the side....interesting transmission and suspension

Close, LB-20 with paired MG's on the sides . The LRM launcher does indeed slew down to the side to reduce height during loading aboard a DropShip if needed. The turret was inspired by the AMX-13-90 and AMX-13-75 but the gun's probably fed by a Soviet style carousel autoloader (jamming arms of the gunner into it is optional).  The suspension's hydropnumatic or a more advanced version of, allowing the tank to 'push up' at the front or squat down to stick its turret over an obstacle and engage.

And no she does not have an infantry compartment. This is faster than the canon standard Ishtar so the engine bay's bigger.
