Description Decided on the material and clothing for the torso. In the bottom half of the torso you can see how I've laid down clay "worms" of various sizes and started blending them in to form material folds and wrinkles.
The upper half shows how using sculpey diluent and a brush, the blending starts to look more natural.
I determined that I wanted a sort of wrapped material look to the clothing, and it comes off looking silk-like. However the colors will show the material to have a more used look.
Still working out the look of the pants at this point. Also I've changed the bangs on her forehead to single clumps of hair, no detail yet.
An original character takes quite a bit more thought than I had expected. I have so many ideas, but locking them down is much harder than working on an already established character.

She looks beautiful already - a bit Coraline-esque, even, if I may say so

Definitely elements of Coraline in her, but I hope to incorporate a bit more alien feel to the finished figurine. Finally figured out what to do with all four arms and hands! She's got a purpose now. Thank you so much for the fave!!

I want to see the complete figure, I'm really intrigued with the posture!

Just go with what works sir - I like the 'wraparound' with her top - makes sense with the 'spider' motif

Yeah, I'm trying to incorporate that into the clothing, Thanks!

Just a thought... but if you were to paint the finished sculpture's clothing with a thin wash of sculpey, waited until it was tacky, and then pressed finely textured cloth against it, would it give you the thread-like quality you want?

Easier to apply it directly to the clay although I might coat it with a thin layer of diluent first. Too far ahead to think of that yet.

Awww! She's really coming along nicely.

Yeah, I know what you mean about OCs, I have a couple from High School that I STILL haven't found a design for them that I just love.

Thanks, I just had to take some time off and recharge. Seems like the clay seems to be working for me instead of against me lately! OCs seem to be harder because you have to make finalized decisions on something that was always light and fluffy in your mind.

I agree, I only have a few that I've really finalized how I want them to look. XP

Must be harder when you're trying to make a clay sculpture of your character.

I know what you mean about creating new characters, I had that trouble with my new sculpture(as you've just seen).
When you're replicating something you just have to make it look right. When you're creating something from scratch, you're thinking, "Does this look better than this? Should this be smaller/bigger? Would it look better in this color?" Stuff like that. It's really hard when you're by yourself, there's no one to bounce ideas off of.

You should sketch out a character concept before starting the figure then~
Love how the finished folds look.

I've always worked from other peoples illustrations. My own drawings tend to be somewhat flat and listless, although I do work out problems with simple sketches. This time I wanted to do something original from the ground up, with only the clay.
I do like the way the top is coming now, after trying a dozen different types of clothing this just "feels" right.
Thank you!!
