This is a preview of my upcoming PsdTuts+ Premium Tutorial that will be released next month.
The steps will all be explained in detail i.e Brushes, Technique, Layering, Effects etc.
Sky, Smoke and Spark textures were from CGTextures.com (application of stock will also be explained in the tutorial!)
Same techniques here.
Photoshop CS5 + 10-15 hours or so.
Airbrush + Texture brushes.
Dodge/Burn and Sharpen/Blur for finishing touches!

you have some patience to wait for the very end to add the glowing eyes. I always get too excited about that stuff

By step 4 I just HAD to put in the eyes to see how it would look! I just hid them until they were ready to be polished off

just wondering why you put the sky in last, wouldnΒ΄t have been better to put it in first so youΒ΄d know where the light & cloud is coming from?

You have an excellent point. But I was planning on the grey cloud background throughout the whole thing. The sudden switch to a blue sky was literally a last minute change

The blue sky looks great, mind you the Armour would have had to be darker if the sky was grey giving it a more darker eiry theme, which would have been cool s well.
I donΒ΄t do much photo shopping and when painting in traditional media the background is normally painted first, thatΒ΄s why I asked. I suppose in digital art anything is possible.
