Sherru — How to color like a sherru

Description HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ~izzyannie !!

I promised ~izzyannie , that I'll make a tutorial on how I color... I don't know if you can call this a tutorial though...

It is a SAI tutorial, but it should work in other programs as well. But personally, when I'd color in Photoshop, I'd prefer to use the chalky brush with lowered flow and opacity, because it gives a more painty look, than 'airbrush opacity flow'.
This of course is only my way of coloring...

I didn't include texturing and other color edits, because this got too long... And also how I choose colors.

# When I make color edits, I am actually not very fond of those Hue/Saturation thingies. I occasionally use Color Balance, but most of the time I just use Gradient Map or the good ol' gradient tool itself.

# I actually choose colors pretty randomly. I know some color theory, but when I color I usually don't think about it. I just choose colors that look good to me
Music helps me a bit with that :'D
Darker songs = darker colors

I also forgot to mention why I prefer using 1 layer!
Well, it's because:
a) the characters blend in with the background more, I guess.
b) the tools I use, work better if they are on the same layer as the base.
c) my computer cant's stand more than 7 layers OTL

I am not happy with the drawing itself, but it shows how I color quite well OTL
Also this tutorial got some major cutting - the original height was 19 803 pixels...
I drew Werner Voss and Manfred von Richthofen, because I promised to include how I make clouds... And I can't help but to add a sky when I draw them, haha. But Voss' face is everything I hate to color OTL

Haha, I learned that technique a bit before making this tutorial X)
The airbrush makes the lines softer and thinner so I like it~
It's good for general lineart too!

Thank you very much for making tutorial! ÖvÖ I gave it a try and it helped a lot, especially with the face area <3 It's good you're honest and point out in this tutorial things you DON'T like. That way I noticed that they really don't look so good in my drawings as I've thought =w=

It's the magic of the marker tool! It blends colors soooo good *u* much better than the water tool - it makes things looking faaaar too soft!

ASDFGHJKL;GH I have to reset my Marker tool. It doesn't give much colour even when I put 72193273924 tons of pressure on my tablet. QuQ But I'll try it againnn!!

Really? D: Make sure, you have the base color on the same layer!
My customized marker doesn't apply any color, if it's on a separate layer...

...Oh, I usually work on a very small canvas (this picture was bigger, because I used it for the tutorial though). Usually the size never goes over 1000 pixels...

XD You're welcome.SAI can't made a very big canvas,pity...I usually working in 1000 pixels too... ...Nothing special,just myself have some quirks of details...use the most small size brush,draw,change,detele,draw...*facepalm* It's trueMy line-draft and the finished stuff almost different thing.
I envy the artist who can use many color finished quickly~:A:

I don't really mind that SAI can't work with big canvases because I find it hard to draw when I have a big canvas... they end up looking like I know nothing of anatomy...
Haha, I work with details the very same way! X) And then it ends up looking so different from the original idea XD
