"Hey Danny."

Night had fallen on Amity Park, and a teenage half-ghost hero gazed at his best friend with twinkling eyes. She smirked softly, raising an eyebrow and folding her arms and sitting next to him on the park bench. A light breeze blew in their direction, Sam Manson now shivering slightly and moving closer to Danny Fenton. He slipped an arm around her, sighing softly. "Hey Sam."

She glanced up at him, and she was surprised to see his face distant and watching the water fountain. She nuzzled into him slightly, the teenager chuckling weakly and stroking her hair just so. He was exhausted as hell, and it was clear by rumpled clothing and messy hair that he'd been through a lot these days. "What're you thinkin' about?"

He glanced down at her, tilting his head. "A lot of stuff. Revealing my identity to Mom and Dad, Plasmius making our lives Hell- you and me…"

"Us?" she inquired, confused.

"Everyone's seeing us as a couple, Sam," he muttered, rubbing his head and looking down now. "And you and I know full and well that we won't ever be a couple." He gestured around. "I mean, look at us. We've been friends since the first grade and everything, and well- you know!" He desperately glanced at her for a moment, her face etched with calm. "It just… wouldn't work!"

She nodded. "I know."

Danny blinked in surprise at this. The way she said it- so serene and peaceful, not at all defeated… Sam watched her best friend's face morph into confusion and chuckled gently. "You don't think I haven't been watching you these past few months? I know your hero complex would get in the way, and you would go off and be worried about me all the time. I don't want you to worry about me. I want you to keep being a hero."

The words slipped into his mind, and the teenager continued to look at the Goth in surprise. "So wait. You don't mind that we're not a couple?"

"Danny. Since when the hell am I ever one for gossip?" Sam teased. "You know I brush it off easily these days. Especially since we're so close to graduation right now and everything… doesn't really matter to me what they all say."

Danny smiled finally, nodding a little and watching the fountain once again as Sam leaned into him gently. "God. Graduating. Can you believe it? After all the crap we've been through these four years, we're finally going out into the real world."

This got him a quiet laugh and a nod. "Amazing. But then- what're we going to do after this all happens? I mean, yeah we have college and everything, but still…"

"Someone's gotta stay here and protect the city, don't they?" he asked softly.

"…idiot," she muttered. "There are other people who can fend for themselves here in Amity, Danny. You don't have to do it alone." Her hand slipped into his. "Some of us DO want to help you and everything, you know?"

Danny looked at her for a long moment before nodding. "It's only gonna get harder from here on out."

"I never was one for the easy way out," she replied, grinning. "College and ghost fighting… sounds hard as hell. Just how I like it."

He smirked in return. "Wouldn't have it any other way, huh?"

"Nope." She glanced around and leaned in. "And for the record, we're not a couple until we go on, like… two dates to the ghost zone."

"Deal."

"Us?" she inquired, confused.

"Everyone's seeing us as a couple, Sam," he muttered, rubbing his head and looking down now. "And you and I know full and well that we won't ever be a couple." He gestured around. Danny smiled finally, nodding a little and watching the fountain once again as Sam leaned into him gently. "God. Graduating. Can you believe it? After all the crap we've been through these four years, we're finally going out into the real world."

This got him a quiet laugh and a nod. "Amazing. But then- what're we going to do after this all happens? I mean, yeah we have college and everything, but still…"

Danny looked at her for a long moment before nodding. "It's only gonna get harder from here on out."

He smirked in return. "Wouldn't have it any other way, huh?"

"Nope." She glanced around and leaned in. "And for the record, we're not a couple until we go on, like… two dates to the ghost zone."
