Description This is my entry for The Witcher Fan Art Contest.

Background:

When I first heard about this competition, I became incredibly excited in wanting to participate. I felt my last art competition entry did not play upon my strengths in architecture, so I decided to create a scene or area of the game focused on a moody architectural element. Originally, I had planned to incorporate some sort of character or monster into the scene, but that fell through because of time constraints and technical difficulties in the rendering process.

Inspiration / Story:

The scene involves a grand library haunted by a mysterious, ephemeral-like creature who returns every year to wreak havoc upon the library and then mysteriously disappear under the moonlight of the Nara’uhn dome. Legend says that the creature seeks a lost relic beneath the dome’s floor. Keepers of the library know to stay clear on this day, fearful of losing their lives over their perpetual studies.

The Witcher, stumbles across this deserted library for shelter (as fate would have it), encounters the monster in a scene that involves destruction of the library, ending in an epic battle that leads underground beneath the Nara’uhn dome.

Technical:

This was modeled in Google Sketchup and imported into 3D Studio Max for materials, rendered using Vray. I over modeled this scene to a devastating extent. There are details far back into the dome that are not even visible from this distance. At first, Vray would just put out these incredible render times (weeks!) and I had to keep messing with the settings in order for this scene to be finished in time. I was afraid for a few days I would not even make the deadline.

References:

I referenced many ancient libraries in addition to modern ones, including the Suzzallo Library.

Good luck to all those who submitted in the contest!

Nice, good job.
I make 3D Art, and I always have a hard time with the lighting, and my program doesn't do as much lighting as I wish it would.

Cheetah3D.
Good for it's price, but doesn't have great textures. And it obviously does do lighting, but doesn't show sun rays or anything.
