Actually I don't think it hurts at all. Β From watching the animation. Β 2 thoughts come to mind on this. Β
First is they are probably closer to living ink (kinda like gels or slimes from rpg games). Β As when they get splatted, they literally splatter. Β Into Ink and reform back into ink. Β
The other thought is kinda like this except they are morphic. Β Not fully shape-shifters but enough to the point that they can shape their body and hair. Β They transform into a squid and then back into a human form. Β So in the process they make hair (tentacles) styles how they want.
