Description Gila is a striker-fired, break open, 8 round revolver with integrated top rail and flash hider. It’s fully ambidextrous, with the striker in the center top of the revolver, and the opening latch and cross-bolt safety on both sides. The cylinder is made of a magnesium alloy, making it as light as aluminum, but as strong as titanium alloys.

It’s available in two barrel lengths: 2” and 6”. The six inch model revolver, the Gila 6, is made of anodized titanium, and comes standard with a black PU leather grip.
The two inch model is also available as the Gila Special, with a black stainless steel body, a mini-dot sight, orange details, an orange fiberglass front sight and a PU leather gila monster styled grip.

I'd take the compact carry one in .357 or .44 as a backup gun

I would buy this. no hammer spur to catch on anything. I would wonder how stable the cylinder is as its removable.

Indeed!
Well there cylinder would be held in place by two bars that fall into place when you pull the trigger. One on the bottom, one in the rotary slots at the back end of the cylinder.

Looks like it combined design elements of the FN Barracuda and the MP412 Rex.

Had to google the Barracuda ^^ but no, neither of those was a source of inspiration.

IggyHazard In reply to Shockwave9001 [2020-01-04 21:41:44 +0000 UTC]

Coincidence then. The top-break design is what made me think of the MP412 Rex (your design is too modern to be compared to the Webley or the Schofield). The swap-out cylinder reminds me of the FN Barracuda.

That magnesium alloy cylinder better be able to resist a lot of heat. That's why revolvers made to be light still go back to steel for their cylinders, besides the strength needed to contain the ignition of cartridges. Even then, there's still the phenomenon of "flame cutting" wherein the part of the topstrap above the cylinder face gets melted away after repeated firing.

Otherwise, nice job. As much as top break action has lots of serious problems in being implemented into modern designs and ammo, I'm still a fan of them. And putting a striker fire action into a revolver is something I keep wondering about.

Honestly I have no idea! I googled what one of the lightest yet strongest metal alloys were, and this came up I’m not an engineer after all.

I’ve heard someone else here also say something about break actions having issues? Never heard that before though. I’d love to know more. And what’s with the ammo?

DreamPen In reply to Shockwave9001 [2020-01-05 14:32:45 +0000 UTC]

Two main issues that I know of:

1. Most modern cartridges are pretty long compared to the ones used when top break revolvers were still plentiful. Longer cartridges mean bigger cylinders. That makes it harder for the top break to eject spent cartridges when broken open (which is one of the main draws of the design).

2. Top break revolvers are usually kept together only by a latch at the rear of the top of the frame. As a moving part, they naturally have some play to them. But over time, the hammering of the frame against itself wears it out, making the break action loose. With today's much more powerful ammo and calibers, this wear will come much, much sooner.

I've read that people have attempted many times to solver either problem but without real success. Maybe some clever or fancy engineering can ultimately fix one or both, but we haven't seen anything of the sort. If someone did succeed, I figure the reason there's no implementation is because of the added cost to the manufacture of the weapon. The alternative- the swing-out cylinder which modern, currently-produced revolvers use- is just simpler, cheaper, easier to make and maintain, more sturdy and robust, etc.

Mhm, interesting! I get it thanks for the explanation!
Obviously my latch is super strong and won’t ever wear down

that's a very sharp looking design. I'm working on a striker fired style revolver design, myself.
