And is there no way to get a similar result with something a bit less memory-intensive? Something that maybe works during the render phase? Even with the screen render?

I looked at doing the windows on the UV MAP, but I'd just never get the same results....

Maybe not, but who's ever gonna use a 100meg model? Quality only goes so far, before something has to be sacrificed for speed...

Yeah, but the conversion to .obj will reduce verts..

How so? A shape is a shape, with however many polygons, and vertices it has. Just changing the format doesn't change the basic structure, does it?

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2008-02-29 23:55:53 +0000 UTC]
It does, as most other programs don't use 'quadratic' shaping... they up polygons or tri's ... I prefer the 4 vertice plane over the 3 vertice tris and Blender does not support polygons (more than 4 vertices per face)

Poser/DAZ do use more than three sided figures. I know, because there's the option of splitting them into triangles on import.

Poser/DAZ object being created with other programs - this tells me that DAZ can use a lot of different types of .obj (as Wavefront is not the only .obj anymore...)

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-01 01:30:04 +0000 UTC]
Don't know... They do call it a wavefront object, I believe. At least DAZ does. But I've never noticed any problem with the imports, even if it does something to them. And since the materials are set up to work with certain polygon groups, it can't very well go changing anything in the model...

Anytime I export to .obj, or to .3ds my mesh does not look 'exactly' the way I made it... and it usually imports back in (ie I export, close blender, open blender and import the .obj that I just exported and it comes back abou 1/3 the size that I created it at... )

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-01 02:02:01 +0000 UTC]
Oh! Oh! I remember having a problem with that! I wish I could remember the option, or check box to eliminate it... It's just an option. I vaguely remember it having to do with the unit scale. they're not meters vs inches, or anything, they're something like Wavefront vs blender scales. If you choose a different one, it comes in absolutely humongous.

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-01 02:22:00 +0000 UTC]
Right! So, the scale in the import and export have to be the same, or it changes size. That's my point. I had to select something in particular to get it to import into DAZ the same size as it was in Truespace, and Blender.

The import into DAZ - to me was always a pain in the ass... I never seemed to get it to import in a 'normal' size --
Also, as an example when I import Millennium Man (ie M3) into Blender he comes in SO small that he fit into one of the keys of the keyboard on the Office scene I made...

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-01 02:35:10 +0000 UTC]
It has import size options. But it's just import TO a particular size. The model is the same, as is the file.

I wonder if the export options have anything to do with the importing sizes...

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-01 04:14:46 +0000 UTC]
Some, yes. When you export to a particular scale, you would have to import to that scale, or it would change. I'm trying to render transparent bubbles yet again at the moment, or I'd go look. 12% opacity, inside a non-shadow cube, with three lights. Highly reflective. It doesn't matter how high the reflectivity is, if the opacity is zero. It doesn't matter how transparent it is, it still shows the bg color on the edges. Makes a nice circle, though. The cube is just for some sort of actual color for reflecting. I'm trying to get soap bubbles.

The problem is that bubbles are always in a background/scene. So I'm not sure you can actually do just a bubble. They interact with light, and scene with reflection, and refraction. I'm trying them inside of another sphere at the moment.

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-02 14:18:27 +0000 UTC]
Tried that. I got a blue bubble. Tried a rainbow fractal and got a rainbow colored, semi-transparent sphere. Looks good, but it's no bubble. I think I should try black diffuse 100%, 100% reflective, low ambient, reflection rainbow plane BEHIND the camera.

Well, regarding stocks.. They come in handy there. Interesting thing... As I lower the opacity, the render looks brighter. 16% opacity looks more see-through than 5%. I can't figure it. I think I'll try going REALLY low, and up into the 20% range.

SiathLinux In reply to markopolio-stock [2008-03-03 03:21:33 +0000 UTC]

markopolio-stock In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-03 04:00:20 +0000 UTC]
As I lower the opacity, the actual image becomes less see-through. But it seems to be extra reflection. As I raise the opacity, the reflection decreases, and it begins to look murky.

So far 16% opacity seems about the best. I have 2.3% rendering now. I should remember to lower my resolution when I do these things. 3kx3k just takes too long for an experiment.

I just let it run in the BG anyway. So unless I get impatient to see it, I'm good to go. They take about an hour each to render. Which is a drastic improvement over the old system. My simple reflective ball took at least three hours on my old machine.

Me too. I just uploaded the bubble to markopolio.com/downloads I don't even see it in Blender. It might be huge or tiny... It doesn't work for Poser, the settings don't transfer. Right this minute, it only works in DAZ. But it works GREAT there!
