I was working out the whole gear thing (I'm making a go kart and need gears on the axle and engine shaft) so I had a new session of Blender to play with the 'best way' to make them (as I've seen two tutorials each with a different method

too bad about the artifacts. you could try to convert these tris'es into quads manually because I'm pretty sure Blender won't like the idea or doing it for you
