Description
Material Testing 1Blender - Gimp
The walls are 'white' with Blender Material 'Cloud'
The floor is UV map and edited with Gimp
The crates are UV map (top and bottom of each are separate) and edited with Gimp
I'll be doing some other material setting using this 'workspace' and the ones that 'work' will find there way into the new lab scene.

i like the floor. i take it it's not bump maped? ive never quite worked out how bump-mapping works in blender

No, it's a trick of the image map itself.

They aren't hidden - they are on the other 'window' that should open when you open GIMP (see my tutorial for a better explanation of what is where in GIMP )

I'm going to do some crates with the 'caution' look to them also and see how that comes out

hmm the lines are too tight together - so it doesn't look right - I'll create a better texture tomorrow
I've made a Coca Cola Cooler (the styofoam style) - I've got to make the lid and handle still - but won't get to work on that till again till Monday

Yeah, I'll mostly do 'simple objects' and then try different textures (both Blender and UV map with Gimp editing).. should be interesting

The floor was done with a VERY dark green at 100% and then the stock 'dots' pattern from Gimp at 50% opacity (as it's a medium gray) so the dark green makes it look darker than it would and gives it a better color - and I still get the cool 'dot' pattern

Really? It actually looks very good, like you have had a dark surface and applied a bump map

lol, the image in Gimp looks like it's bump mapped before doing anything to it
