Yeah, when 'browsing' that is the 'desktop' folder....

Nice system!
Can you get Beryll and Combiz Fusion or would that become incompatible?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-12-02 22:51:02 +0000 UTC]

either or not both at same time - Of those if I used on it would be Compiz Fuzion (rotating desktops is just the coolest thing to me)

Gymnart In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-03 20:26:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my son-in-law had that on his Ubuntu too. It was cool to see!

SiathLinux In reply to Gymnart [2009-12-04 00:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Ubuntu has it too - I don't actually use it though as I prefer my memory for running Blender, GIMP, Firefox, and Tetris

Yeah, I know, but yet at the same time it's functionality is so much different.

I like that and tried it last week...I had to register w Novell and it had nice feel but I moved to Ubuntu Ultimate..which is gnome and kde mixxed together as one operating system

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-01 21:46:57 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard of Gnome integrating with KDE, I'm running KDE 4.3.3 for my desktop (though I can boot to Gnome if I want to, this new KDE is really nice and runs most Gnome applications flawlessly.

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-02 05:13:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes it true but in the case of Ultimate Ubuntu its all put together as 1 unique program and special sounds and emerald beryll and compiz is very slick

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-02 22:53:51 +0000 UTC]

I have compiz fusion (though I have choose not to set it up, it uses a lot of memory) - but I have to admit it's slick and I love the rotating screens and such.

yes it needs 1 gb to really work effectively I dont use it..but once in a while just for eyecandy turn it on...enable it for a session

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-04 00:42:49 +0000 UTC]

It's not for lack of DDR2 (I have 3GB), it's just that I'd rather have it for having Blender, GIMP, Mozilla, and Tetris running

Well i initially said it was DDR3 and as yu can see its DDR2 ...but i havent finished all my build...sadly cant afford blue ray just yet...But the speed is lightning fast

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-05 22:37:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but DDR2 is good and stable.

Bah, Blue Ray - I don't subscribe to Sony's way of doing things - HD is HD... and HD/DVD is good enough for my needs

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-05 23:38:57 +0000 UTC]

YES it plenty fast

Yeah, we have to get a 2nd car, but I think I'll have enough to get a new mobo - I have everything else I need...

I need a new computer in order to have better ability to run servers remotely (as in I'm in Florida and the servers will be in Kentucky), and still be able to create 3d and such

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-06 12:36:41 +0000 UTC]

I saved my old hilatious built well Alien Turbo tower..and just refitted it with the board..ram..and 120 gb hard drive with 1/2 TB external HD for storing data...has CDRW and DVDRW and ..i use it on a CRT screen..I have flat panel LCD too...but i just like my 17 inch Phillips Lightframe Flat CRT Monitor for graphics and color

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-06 22:27:41 +0000 UTC]

The Phillips - I've looked at those they are really nice for color 'exactness', I'll probably run dual monitors on my next desktop, since the Dell 19" Flat panel are dropping in price.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-06 22:47:59 +0000 UTC]

Yes only prob with ..any of the flat panels is the screen refresh rate ..most are at 60..maybe 75 ..on CRT's and with Ubuntu Ultimate Edition I can set rate from 60-108 hz and have striking rich color BUT the Dell Flat Panels are very nice and have the same type "Crystalbrite" technology..that I have on my Toshiba Satellite Win7 laptop...it really slick and clean ...on another note I have an old really nice 16 inch Compaq CRT ..and LOL it only has 1024 x 768 rez even on a 16 inch

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-07 00:29:01 +0000 UTC]

On my next computer it will be these: [link] <24" Wide Screen Dell

My last TTX CRT was 21" with 1920x1660 resolution.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-07 11:58:54 +0000 UTC]

OH yes ....I have 1920 x something less on a Viewsonic ..i got at TigerDirect

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-07 18:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I miss that old TTX CRT - it was the best monitor I've had, but yeah, I'll be going with those Dell's (especially since I can do the asset management with them for my business.)

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-07 19:08:43 +0000 UTC]

yes and in these economy times the box i just built ..via putting new mobo ram and HD into an otherwise perfectly high quality tower that i skeletoned and rebuilt was cheaper than a new mid grade computer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-08 21:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, glad to see that some of the things I want for my next build are coming down in cost (I really want that DVD RW that can burn the label on the disk for me )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-08 23:35:05 +0000 UTC]

And thast tower so well built i could do it again..in 3 yrs...empty tower weights 28 lbs ..about 40 lbs fully built .. heavy built for Alienware when Turbo built the cases before Apevia then Dell bought them out

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-09 02:16:00 +0000 UTC]

I don't think some of the newer cases are as durable as or as well built as the older cases.
I have a Blue Max case that I can build in, it's large enough to dang near put a server mobo in....)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-09 04:50:56 +0000 UTC]

That Alien Turbo case is a fulltower case ..7 fans ..5 5.25 bays 1 3.5 floppy or card reader bay and 5 internal hard drive bays with removable trays mounted facing you when you open the case..the only plastic in it is the front trim panel and the locking door..remveable tray for mounting the mobo and dual rail system for the PSU has a 650 w now...and a cpu fan thermaltake which is adjustable

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-10 01:21:53 +0000 UTC]

I can't find an image and I'm too lazy to unbury it today - but this one has 4 external 5.25 behind a door, 2 3.5 drive bays also behind the door, and 7 internal 3.5 drive bays, can support MATX, BATX, ATX, EATX boards... the case has a windowed lighted fan side, space for 4 fans (60mm) in the front lower (for inbound) and 2 fans in the back (which are just beside the expansion card openings (60mm also) and then can fit any psu I want in the space above the mobo...

Make that Blue, smooth the door - and you have the case I have.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-12 02:12:44 +0000 UTC]

They had them in other colors when i bought mine and with eyes that lit up ..like the alienware cases,,but basically all the same internally

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-13 02:00:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think the biggest difference was the back - yours with that huge 120mm rear, and mine with stacked 60mm fans...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-13 04:39:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes mine has 2 - 120 mm fans and 4 80mm Fans plus the PSU fan and the CPU fan

The earlier case was Alienware produced and the platic frames that the fans snap into are green platic not the later blue plastic Its a sold tower and i use it with a cold swap hard drive unit ..instead of running a dual boot to dual hard drives ..that way I can have as many op systems as I have trays for
Curently just 3 ..although I am most liking the Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.4 I also run Suse 11.2 ..and am working on getting the bugs out of an E17 Distro

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-13 14:57:28 +0000 UTC]

If you get that E17 Distro to 'do right let me know - cause I love Enlightenment's smoother looks and click anywhere menu system.

I have tried ELIVE stable and test distro Geubuntu whcih was based off Ubuntu 8:10 and had no sound ..and now soon Linux Mint and PC Linux OS will both have DR17 ..which based on mandrake are ..better E 17's

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiathLinux In reply to Alembic-Lynx [2009-12-13 20:40:20 +0000 UTC]

I have found that sound under Ubuntu is difficult at best - I had to fight with OpenArtist Linux (an Ubuntu 8.10 based Distro - technically Mint Linux rebuilt), but I've never had any trouble with sound on any Distro that was .rpm based (Fedora/Mandriva/RH core).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alembic-Lynx In reply to SiathLinux [2009-12-14 02:11:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes and why i like SuSe the best as they are an .rpm distro BUT now since Suse 11.0 you have to buy the fluendo codecs to play mpeg and dvd whereas debian and metacity give you all that free Knoppix also nice but I lost interest with Knoppix after vs 5.3
