Just something that I'd thought about for a while, decided to see how well it would work...Planet textures and bump created with the Gimp 2.2.10
Planets created with Blender 2.41
Finish work done with the Gimp 2.2.10

Honestly thanx, this was done on a 'low buck' computer (ie a used PIII@800) so render size is limited by the Sdram memory and the slow processor...) - As I learn the full capabilities of both Blender and the Gimp, I will now doubtedly improve..

Yes you are great job on this using the tools you have I'm impressed and I'm sure you are being held back by your computer as well

I'm going to try to do glass next.... I've heard that it can be challanging....

Glass can be a lot of fun its basicly a transparency with reflective refractive capabilities sure sounds easy eh!

Yes there is a bit of a learning curve to it yes sometime the best thing to do is walk away and good luck with it

Thanx for that link... I needed it... all my attempts at glass last night resulted in solid panels that were not see thru at all.

The tutorial helped some.. (unfortunately not with glass - but with how to put a hole into an object..) as the tutorial is for an older version and the interface has totally changed since that version. I will work this glass thing out as I need it for a scene I want to create.
