Description
This is the final demo scene for my night lighting tutorial. It uses a Liam 8/Lucian 8 combo character with Michael 8 skin and Beautiful Skin Iray shaders, the blood decal from Liam Genesis 3 Male, the Modern Romance outfit, and the Creepy Hollow set, all from Daz3d. The hair is the Tousled Hair for Genesis 8 Male.
Rendered in Daz Studio 4.11 Pro Beta, compositing for canvases in the GIMP (with free .exr reader plugin so I could open the canvases).
The tutorial is here.
Tutorial: Lighting and Rendering Night ScenesWorking with the Iray render engine, and seeing what people do with it on deviantart, over time I've seen the same mistakes repeated many times. One of the most common that I see has to do with rendering night scenes or other scenes that are meant to be dark.
The thing is that the human eye is bad at seeing in the dark. If you render literally what someone would be seeing, your scene will look terrible, but this is exactly what I see many people doing. Hollywood movies often use two specific techniques to create night scenes: lit foreground objects against dark backdrops and "blue-for-night" lighting. There's a third option (used more in horror) that I will also cover, the use of strong specular highlights and/or rim lighting. Let's take them one at a time.
Foreground/Background Contrast Lights
So, first of all, lit foreground. To get a scene that looks "dark" but still has visible subjects, the best method is to light the obj

Iray Render Challenge June 2018: The DarknessHello again! We're back with another Iray Render Challenge!
Rules:
1. The render must be somehow related to darkness. It can be at night, but any sort of darkness will do. If you're not sure how to light a night scene in Iray, here's some help.
2. It must be rendered in the Iray render engine.
4. It must be created on or after 06/17/18. Challenge closes on 07/01/18. There's not a prize, we each get to have our work seen and see some fun images from others on the same theme!
5. Postwork, doing sims in other programs, etc., it's all fine as long as the render itself is done in Iray. It doesn't matter what figures or models you use either. You don't have to list anything about how the render was made, but it's always interesting to see what techniques people use.
6. NSFW is fine, but please make sure you set your image as Mature if it contains nudity, sex, gore, lethal vio

Love his pose and that lantern. It has something uncanny, like he's a spirit come back from the dead...
