Description
Oh my goodness. This was a huge challenge for me in many ways. I haven't worked with graphite on this scale in a very long time. It's actually probably been several years since I've produced anything with detail. But I enjoyed getting back to it and focusing on shading and tones rather than color. And the wolf. I've never drawn a wolf before. That fur gave me so much trouble and proved to be such a challenge. But, it was also a lot of fun and I think I'm going to be trying it again in the near future. I'm reasonably pleased with how parts of the fur turned out, though I know the anatomy is a bit off. My electric eraser helped a lot with the fur (and the clouds). And the horse is either very small or the wolf is huge. Oh well. I like big wolves. I think they're magnificent animals.Unfortunately, my scanner killed so much of the detail in this, especially in terms of subtle shading. There is a lot more to the snow than you can see here. But, no matter how I play with the settings, my scanner is determined not to appease me. I don't know when that thing acquired such an attitude. Anyway, the fur on the wolf and the birch trees actually scanned pretty well, so I'll be happy with that.
The cloud...haha. It's a cloud. I need to work on those fluffy things. Little clumps of snow are more difficult to draw than they seem. You have been warned. The evergreen trees in the background make me smile, as does the reflection on the frozen lake. They remind me of Bob Ross, so that's probably why.
Comments, critiques, scanner tips all welcome

At first I thought it was Sleipnir and Fenrir ^^
It looks amazing! Love the clouds, the wolf's fur, and the horse's legs

Layers--when working with graphite or colored pencil, I start with the light colors and work up to the shadows. With graphite, I'll use an eraser to get the really bright highlights I need; with colored pencil I'll use the white pencil to brighten the highlights. I'm also a big fan of blending tools for undercoats to get the basic blocks of shadows and highlights in

Thanks Ashley. I always appreciate great advice. I may try that. I used to have some of Prismacolor's colorless blenders but they are mostly nubs now.

I love their colorless blenders! The white pencil does a decent job blending too, but I've found that it dulls the colors somewhat whereas the blender tends to brighten them

When I came to your page to read the bunch of new journal entries from the last time I logged on I made an audible "ooo"
I think you really stepped up your game with this piece! The way the horses legs contrast with the white snow is really dynamic.
I Think an earlier commenter gave you great advice about the faces...
I see more graphite in your future!! lol

I definitely need to break out the graphite pencils again! It's been too long since I've done any sort of full-blown, detail piece in general too. I've had a pastel piece in mind for a while, so hopefully I can get that going in the near future

I enjoyed drawing the fur and would love to have a go at it again, fix up the anatomical faults and such
I appreciate your comment on my style too. It's been something I've been struggling with a little bit lately. Nice to get some positive encouragement on what I'm doing, especially since I'm planning on working primarily in graphite again for a while.

This piece is a wonderful example of traditional pencil work. I love the angles you've chosen for the horse, his turned head gives him a dynamic position that adds depth. Although the horses depth isn't matched by the wolf who's face seems to be a little flat and one sided. In this piece I would maybe have recommended that the wolf too had more angle to his head and body giving him the same lovely depth that was created in the horse. The fur on the wolf also has a more harsher shading to it making them look not as unified as they could be. Other than that your contrast is great and the anatomy is very close if not dead on.
Hope this helps!
PS. Sometimes taking pictures is better than scanners.

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! I will definitely keep your suggestions in mind for the next time I work with graphite
I especially appreciate your feedback about the wolf. This is the first one I've drawn, so I'm still figuring them out. The fur was a lot of fun, but I agree that it could perhaps be softer.
You've encouraged me to keep working in pencil and tackle wolves as a new artistic subject
Ah, and I would have tried taking a photo but the battery charger seems to be MIA

Yeah battery chargers are always MIA.
Wolves can be hard sometimes so I'd keep working with them. You seem to have a good handle for them if this was your first time drawing one.
I'd like to see more graphite work from you.

I used to work in graphite a lot before switching to colored pencils. This was really refreshing and I realized how much I'd missed my pencils Also a good way to work on shading and depth, methinks

LOVING those birch trees! And the wolf's fur looks wonderful! I also love how lightly you shaded the snow, and let the lack of shadow speak for itself.

Haha, I like these birch trees too. They're fun to draw. I think I have a weird obsession with them Seriously though. Old drawings of horses in snow. Birch trees. All birch trees
And I'm glad the snow looks OK. There's a little more shading in real life, but maybe it didn't lose as much in the scan as I thought

I've noticed the birch tree in the snow motif from you, that's true. And snow with full moonlight.
Heehee. I like the lack of shading (in part because I know I'd kill the whiteness of the snow myself...)
