Recognize this character? You probably do. Her name is Maria, and she's probably one of the most famous background characters in history; you've probably seen her hundreds, or even thousands of times walking the hallways of Lakewood Elementary, or sitting at her desk in Mr. Ratburn's class on ARTHUR.Now, here's the upshot: despite being a background character who has never spoken a word of dialogue in all these years, she apparently is so popular among the Arthur fandom that she's actually getting her own episode this upcoming season. Is that wild?

she is a great character, she i realize (i h,h,have seen this ep.) sadly h,h,has a stutter, it is nothing to be embarrassed about Maria, just d,d,don't worry or be scared you'd get mocked cos a lot of characters on Arthur, can get nervous and slightly stammer and get tongue tied or feel afraid to talk cos of their problem, believe me, been there, 'n done that.... felt stupid when i try to say something and i got kinda gobbledygook-esque.

ohh and anxious? I like this girl, she seems so relatable.
Yet other characters get actual episodes and have supporting roles *cough* Bud, Ladonna* etc
nothing against them since they are nice but maria has been in the show for years....

Interestingly enough, this episode has pretty much been made specifically for the fans. Greg Bailey has recognized that many fans have been speculating for years why Maria never talks (mainly because she's always been a background extra), so they finally decided to come up with a reason why she's never spoken in all this time, and as it turns out, she's a stutterer. Admittedly, I was almost certain Maria was going to be the next in a long like of "Arthur Afflicted" characters: seems like almost every time a new character is added (Marina, Carl, Lydia), or a backgroundΒ character is promoted to a supporting character (George, Jenna) it's because they're somehow afflicted with something and are therefore used solely for the intention of talking about whatever affliction they have. Not that that's a bad thing, persay, but it really seems like the show hasΒ a "Disease of the Week" thing going, and it even sometimes plagues the main characters when they never had any problems beforehand (like Binky's peanut allergy, or Buster's thumb-sucking problem, for instance).

yeah that is true, the supporting characters have the problems and issues like nosebleeds, bed wetting etc
Marina is blind, lydia is in a wheelchair and only had one real episode and maria is in the background so she will have a stutter? and be an anxious character? lol are any of them not afflicted with something? Arthur has to wear glasses and yeah the peanut allergy with binky, francine vomiting, Busters thumb sucking, Arthur needing glasses etc. There would be SOME relatively healthy children lol

Arthur himself can be given the benefit of the doubt, especially considering he was a product of another era in society where glasses were the target of bullies (and Arthur was bullied a little at first for being a "four-eyes", until seeing Wilbur Rabbit wearing the same frames as him boosted his confidence to not let the teasing bother him, then it stopped), but glasses are socially acceptable now, and have been for at least a couple of decades.
I mean, you do have to give the show and the writers credit, they are trying to be inclusive so all kids can have a character or characters they can relate to . . . I'm wondering when and if they'll ever end up doing an episode where one of the kids turns out to have gluten allergies since that's the big thing right now.

Not necessarily; I just figured I'd give her a nervous/uneasy face considering so many people are obsessed with her, despite all these years she's been a [i]silent background extra[/i] and ended up getting her own episode because of it.

It hasn't aired in the U.S. yet, but from what I understand, she never talks because she's a stutterer, but she has to overcome it because she's going to be the anchor of the school news program.

I'll agree.Β Why now?Β They made a lot of minor characters into major ones in the past, why wait this long in the game to have done anything?Β And how will we know she's going to be engaging and unique in a show with so many characters already?
