Song: Letters to the PresidentArtist: Hawk Nelson
Album: Letters to the President (2004)
Lyrics:
"When we were younger we used to sit on my porch
And talk smack about girls and professional sports
There's a lot of things I wanted to say
But never got a chance to find a way
(One) take a good look at all of our high schools
This is the first reason that I want to write you
It must be tough when society is messed up
Gotta save money, please don't take it out on us
Do they even know? Do they even know?
If I was brave I'd write a letter to the president
And have him pass it to the leaders of our parliament
But for now I won't say nothing
From all the kids who would stand in my residence
Who see this letter as a statement of our innocence
But for now I won't say nothing
Now that we're older a brand new story unfolds
About God and the laws that we've always been told
And there's a lot of things I wanted to say
But never got a chance to find a way
Same-sex marriage in a state where they don't care
Murder is wrong but the jail time's not fair
Not to mention date rape, felony and car theft
Break it down and tell me what we've got left
Do they even know? Do they even know?
If I was brave I'd write a letter to the president
And have him pass it to the leaders of our parliament
But for now I won't say nothing
From all the kids who would stand in my residence
Who see this letter as a statement of our innocence
As for now I'll start with something
Take a good look at Tommy, he's a track star
Good role model, has a chance to go real far
Then the school made a budget-cut
Cut out the track team
Now instead Tommy is a crack head
Same-sex marriage in a state where they don't care
Murder is wrong but the jail time's not fair
Not to mention date rape, felony and car theft
Break it down and tell me what we've got left
If I was brave I'd write a letter to the President
And have him pass it to the leaders of our parliament
But for now I won't say nothing
From all the kids who would stand in my residence
Who see this letter as a statement of our innocence
As for now I'll start with something"

Ok. now the real commenty stuff
Especially now, this song is all too real. Way to real for my tastes.
I'd rather not have to deal with the fact that the next time the district's strings teacher quits (yes. the entire school district has 1 strings teacher) they probably aren't going to replace her. they almost didn't this year. Not that school orchestra means a great deal to me, but there are people in the system that it does mean a lot to.
The bit about the same sex marriage in a state where they don't care, murder and the jail time's not fair, that's what the picture represents.
When you mix those things, you get a cracked society, and budget cuts of things the district deems unnecessary.
and its like, do our politicians even know what they're doing... do they?

Only one strings teacher in the district?
How can you survive?
And I won't even get started on the same sex marriage thing. I tend to babble when I'm b*tching about stupid people who think they can tell others who they can and cannot marry.

yup. 1 teacher for the district.
but only 3 schools in the district have a strings program (our 2 arts magnet schools, and our IB school which if we can get 10 people will have IB music).
this year, she spent 45 minutes at the high school, 3 classes at the elementary school , then 4 classes i think at the middle school.
no planning pd. or lunch.

yeah. she does private lessons too. 10 dollars for 30 minutes.
she's adopted 2 of the kids she taught.
one still lives with her. he's 21. and still doesn't have a driver's liscence.
but the school said as soon as he gets his degree, he can get a job teaching for the district.
