I felt like another generic one. And this might be the first time that I've actually gone as far as to include a foreground subject. Winning.

Haha, thank you! I agree, this turned out pretty nicely. I relied really heavily on cheap tricks and gimmicks though, not a lot of technical skill haha.

Cheap tricks gets people to the top then you can do technical things to stay at the top hehehe
jkjk. It's a skill nontheless

Actually vice versa hahaha. Skill to get there, gimmicks / tricks as the final topping.

Just finished watching the video. xD so beautiful I cannot believe how many shades of blue there are in this... (guess that is why I am no where near a good artist) + this only took an hour >.< wow.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SkarValidus In reply to 11linda [2011-10-04 06:05:02 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! The trick to using so many shades is to take advantage of layer modes and filters. Once you have some forms painted, it's easy to amplify and alter them.
Practice, practice! If you want to get good, set a bit of a goal, find some really inspirational pieces, and fly at it!

Lol, it would take me a long time to learn to do landscapes like that! + I only have a mouse, so it is really annoying... I do use layers for shading, but I never have gotten close to as many as you have. Practice is key though I know that!

Oh, yeah. A tablet is really necessary...
I've got a little walkthrough regarding colour on my YouTube, maybe that would help?

xD, it may... but for now I am fine with simple things... I want to learn to draw because I am doing animation... and I can do characters somewhat ok, but not backgrounds >.< so it kind of sucks xD...

It's really great ^^ I love the figure in the foreground. Man, you are amazing and drawing landscapes. I wish I could do that.

Thanks! Yes, I succumbed to the tradition of placing an adventurer in the foreground haha.
I used to say the same thing when I saw people like ~erenarik and *Fel-X . Actually, I still do. But it's all about practice. Dive in and try something. And you can always feel free to ask me for pointers on a piece you've made!
The videos I've posted give a pretty good idea of what the process looks like. Just stay loose and chill and don't worry about details too much yet.

Thanks ^^ I guess one of my biggest problems is I'm not very patient. I have a very hard time sitting down and finishing something... whereas you can just whip these out in one go I need to work on that..

SkarValidus In reply to Kinsara [2011-10-04 05:48:44 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I'm so glad that I decided to develop my speed... It's all in the practice. at first I didn't understand how to do it. Everything took 4 hours and was terrible. But I slowly started to learn techniques to get ideas down quickly without them looking terrible.
It would be a good idea to start with a simple idea like this one. Mountains, a lake, and a person. Nothing fancy. Just start laying in colours and trying some things. Post the results and I can tell you what's working for you.

Kinsara In reply to SkarValidus [2011-10-05 14:29:47 +0000 UTC]
Okay ^^ Thanks! I think I'll try that.. Architecture and landscapes are two things I need to work on a lot.. I'll see if I can make anything decent to put up
Another problem though is that my only two programs are PSelements10 and SAI, they're both pretty good but not at the caliber of yours. Did you actually buy.. CS4 I believe it was?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SkarValidus In reply to Kinsara [2011-10-05 16:50:09 +0000 UTC]
Oh, same about architecture. I've actually got a sketch of little inn / mansion thing that I'm hoping to paint and record today.
From what I've seen, SAI can do some pretty cool stuff... And you could probably grab a trial of PSCS4 to try out. What exactly are the tools in CS4 that you would like to have? And yes, I certainly did buy the CS4 suite... It's priced outrageously.

I know it's really expensive and I already payed $60 for SAI.. SAI is amazing, it's really simple to use, the main thing is its brushes leave a little to be desired and I still can't figure out how to make my own.

SkarValidus In reply to Kinsara [2011-10-05 22:42:31 +0000 UTC]
Looks like you can snag CS5 for under 200$ in most places, but that's still a stretch. It's worth it, if you can get the money together. SAI looks like it wouldn't be good for environment sketching and the concept stuff I like to do, based on the style that people seem to use with it. It looks like it gives a smoother, more stylized look.

Haha, thank you! I've been pushing my boundaries a lot lately since I have so much time. Do you think I should do more videos with music or voiceovers?
And yeah, Blackmill is pretty prime. Try just looking him up on YouTube and going through some of his mixes and original songs. So great.
