Description
Last night I tested a few different fusible stabilizers to try to get the extremely stretchy velvet to have the same stretch as Minky. It might be hard to tell, but by using the tricot fusible soft stretch bias stabilizer. I was able to get it to behave just like minky. So now, my plushies can have that lovely velvet metallic look without having to go through the pain of adjusting the pattern to deal with the stretch difference. I hope this helps other people as I could not find a tutorial or information for such a thing so I took a gamble with some stabilizers in hopes of cutting back on the stretch. The photo is kind of bad, but the Velvet with the stabilizer is definitely super close to being the exact same size as the minky test. I think it only had about 1 or 2 cm stretch difference when measured but that's not really visible on the stuffed tests subject.
Now my infinite can have his metallic mask made with something a little more durable than metallic spandex which has the nasty habit of rubbing off...

Oh I see, you wanted a shiny fabric look. I've only used the velvet fabric for plushie garments. Great idea, I haven't tried this yet. I like to use the stiff stabilizer for shaping wings, hat rims, swords, and bags. You can also use the light weight iron on stabilizer to stiffen up delicate fabric, set it in place and applique.

I like to use a foam purse stabilizer for things like that. Since it easily pops back into place and gives the wings, hat rims and rabbit ears a squishy plush feel to them while still keeping its structure.

Oh nice. I haven't seen any of that foam stabilizer from Joann. Maybe I just never notice it. I know that Joann carries something similar in a green color. I've only used it once for a big project. You have inspired me to also share some more tips. I post something up later.

This actually does help me quite a lot. Now my robots can be metallic and I can actually have a shiny shell on my Changelings.
If only a knew how to use stabilizers. lol. I'll learn don't worry.

It's pretty simple. All you do is iron the rough side onto the back of the velvet fabric. Just make sure to put a scrap piece of cotton fabric or non-stick parchment paper down over it so the iron won't touch the velvet as it might melt the backing.
