Description "There there, little one. You are safe here with me in the forest."

The character of Skunk is based on an imaginary guardian that I had as a child. She first appeared in a dream of mine where I had been wandering through the forest. I soon crossed paths with Skunk, a goddess who looked like how I imagined an adult version of myself to look, and unfortunately for me, she didn't want to be disturbed. Annoyed by my presence, she placed a curse on me, one that could not be cured and would never go away. After this, she became a recurring character in future dreams.

In subsequent dreams, I would plead for mercy and forgiveness, only for her to ignore me. One day, she had decided that I had suffered enough, and chose to forgive me and remove the curse. She also saw how much pain I was in, how miserable the real world had made me, and she chose to become my friend and guardian. The real world was unkind to me, but in my dreams and my daydreams, Skunk, imaginary as she was, provided the comfort, warmth, understanding, love, kindness, and friendship that did not exist for me in the real world. In times when life was at its absolute bleakest, when abuse was eating away at my sanity, and I had nothing but the world inside my mind, she helped me to cope with the horrors of life.

Skunk was the person I wanted to be when I grew up.

In the world of Shining Silver Starlight, Skunk has been altered into a character with more depth, rather than existing simply as my imaginary guardian. Instead of meeting Skunk, the real world me has a dream where I am wandering through the forest and encounter a strange imp named Lumstigethers, an elder god resembling a scarecrow, that lives in the dream world. I tell him that I want to die, but he offers me a new life, one that I would enjoy, as a goddess in another world.

When I accept this offer, he reveals his true intentions, that he has used me in order to create a link that would allow him to escape from the dream world and wreak havoc on reality one day. I quickly forget this, however, as I am whisked away to another world, the world of Galmiun, where I awaken as an adult goddess named Skunk with no memory of this past life, save for a few vague images and voices that I don't recognize. It is at this point that Skunk diverges from the real world me and finds herself on a very different path, leading to her becoming a rather different person from myself.

Thank you very much. Shining Silver Starlight really comes from the heart, and a whole lot of hardship, and it's my way of paying tribute to the one who cared for me most. And with this series, I want to make something both fun and heartfelt for others to enjoy, so Skunk can enrich the lives of countless others as well.

I love this story. What was the curse that she put on you and then lifted?

Thank you. While I was on a camping trip, I ended up getting sprayed by a skunk. I was a small child, and was easily led into believing that it was permanent. The severe stress of believing my life was forever ruined seemed to cause Skunk to appear in my dreams, and for whatever reason my subconscious represented this real-life trauma as aΒ divine punishment, perhaps as some form of coping mechanism. So in my dream, Skunk punished me by cursing me with a foul-smelling substance that would never wash off, and I would be stuck like that forever unless she decided to take pity on me, which she eventually did at some point after my real-life affliction had gone away.

I've had a kind of strange obsession with skunks ever since early childhood myself. Not exactly the same as yours, but something that has made me feel a powerful connection to the animal. I've not yet figured out quite what to do with it.Β

Thank you. I've been practicing drawing, and while I still have a very long way to go, I managed to get the confidence to try drawing this scene. It was hard to plan it out, but it came out better than I expected.

Thank you. This is a scene I've been wanting to draw for a while. It's the most emotionally charged drawing I've made, depicting a scene that was common in my dreams. Despite being imaginary, Skunk was the only person I wasn't afraid of, the only person I felt I could trust, and the only person who could make me feel better. She continues to inspire me to try to be a good person, as well as inspiring my work.
