Description
I made stuff in Quartz Composer. Basic idea was to utilize my old midi-visualizer patch to create something a bit odd. I added some fluid simulation after the generation of the circles. The fluid sim is in real time. It's based on a patch available in Quartz Composer called 2D Fluid Simulation and it does a pretty decent job.
All real time
And mind you, I'm just smashing on the keyboard.

I was thinking of actually projecting this right on my keyboard instead of the screen. To be more specific, I was thinking of having the shape of the key become the fluid shape itself. Now I hope that's not that boring.

No that actually sounds really interesting, but what I meant by boring was that the shapes remained the same and I started thinking about guitar hero... I was just looking forward to an evolution of shapes with the music but I didn't like where it went. I do a lot of abstract work though so this is just my bias.
I love fusion of light and music btw, and I like your ideas.

Will probably throw that on the list of stuff. Currently the circles are just images which is why they're static and hard to work with. Originally they were 3D and rotated in 3D space. Too bad it took too much GPU power to run it with the fluid simulation.
