After losing to Lt. Surge and being made illegal to battle, Pika felt worthless. What could a Pokémon who couldn't battle do- other than be a waste of space? She let Skye down, their dreams were ruined. All because she wasn't good enough.

Zig, who has been Pika's mentor figure since she came to the ranch, did his best to snap her out of it. He does succeed somewhat, enough for Pika to lift her head back up. He tells her that, even though she is unable to battle, she is still Skye's best friend and that they needed each other.

Not long after this, Zig dies. With Zig gone, Pika doubles-down on being there for her devastated trainer, despite her own grief. Eventually, Pika becomes Skye's Emotional Support Pokémon, which in turn, gave Pika a sense of purpose again.

This takes place a little bit after this picture;

An attempt to paint a background with the characters being less of a focus. I always tend to draw the same formula of waist-up shots with little to no background. Also, trying to find a good style in painting backgrounds is. . .not fun <:')
