So that's what the looked like!  The illustrations weren't the greatest that story

I didn't like Kenny's art much as a kid but his style has really grown on me. That first illustration in 'Hullo Twins' alone warrants his place up high against the other illustrators but I think 'Duck and the Diesel Engine' was his best book overall.

I agree with you completely, however, the illustrations in "The Deputation" make Donald and Douglas' snowplows look incredibly creepy.

This is what they wore for snowploughs?

I've seen only a trickle of 812s in snow but the one in the above March 1950 photo is a pre-1935 version of the No.3 type, as bar the initial wedge the ramp was comprised of wood
www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXn57w…
and it was also compatible with the L&NWR/LMSR 7F 0-8-4Ts. The Caledonian were responsible for influencing the LMSR and even BR types of snowplough but if I say much more i'm really treading water.

This c1912 photo below of CR No.291 is sporting the Caledonian's imposing No.1 design but isn't much use for photoshopping

The ones Donald and Douglas are fitted with in 'The Deputation' Kenny based on British Railways's version of the No.3 type,

which was designed for clearing 5-8ft drifts and the updated standard allowed for the additional top component to be swung out in order for the fireman to still be able to open the smokebox door.

Ah, I see. That would explain the size difference.

I've seen photos of the Isle of Man engines with snowploughs, and they seemed to have small snowploughs that went up to the buffer beam. (that is, if they even had any buffers)

Still don't know much about Man's engines so far I'm afraid but the bufferbeam level types are just for keeping the line clear while pulling normal trains rather than for the purpose of charging into drifts. Plenty of Black 5s that operated in the north could be seen with them at times (designed for clearing up to 2ft of snow) but the No.3 type exampled above seems rare as 0-6-0s normally did clearance work in adverse weather....now can I find an 812 patrolling back-to-back with another

I know. Our engines aren't exactly the type that are built for snow, but they do have snowploughs.

It's always a little odd seeing narrow gauge engines with snowploughs as you don't expect them to have enough weight behind them to tackle much but still i'm sure yours can manage a few good turns. Not sure if it still exists but the R&ER used to attach their snowplough to a weed killing truck and would push from behind I believe, will try and find the pic.

Well, the snowploughs we have are small and are pretty much one of the smaller ones on that blueprint you showed me.

Ah found the pic, it's actually smaller than I recalled so pretty close to the one you have by the sound of it.

Yeah, it's that sort of design. That's how small the IOM engines' snowploughs are.

Thanks, been hoping to find a McIntosh plough pic for ages. Actually acquired two examples yesterday but the other is a rear view shot so no good for editing. This one of No.57597 is 'cool' though as the tender is still in LMS livery, not unheard of for the early 50s but still somewhat rare.
