Description
This was done on the same page as my Whoa. . . Luke sketch . I was really very happy with this one. So much so that I've already put it into another illustration with Lana. I can't wait to finish that one. If it turns out half as good as this quick study sketch then I will be beyond very happy.I found Mark Hamill's Amazing Stories episode Gather ye Acorns at blockbuster Video and grabbed screencaps for reference in the future. This study sketch is just the first used from the new references. Enjoy Luke smilling, he does it so infrequently you know.

You're really really good at capturing his facial expressions.

Thanks. I've mooned over Luke so much that I guess it's starting to pay off.

Yes you saw it too, as it was on the same page as the Whoa Luke. Course he's not colored in so he doesn't really stand out on the page.

Aww. That's very sweet...
It's interesting - none of the (main) characters seem to smile a lot in SW, at least not sincerely. You're right that Luke smiles rarely, and I think Leia smiles even less, and whenever Han smiles, it's usually sarcastic.
The thing is, I tend to remember Luke as more of a smiling person than he really is... because his face is different from every other character's in that it's open. Seems like everybody else has a wall set up in front of their face.

Oh Luke has his wall, only it didn't show up until the very end of Empire. It's in full meason throughout most of Jedi. The only difference between Luke's wall and everybody eles wall is that he does look tend to around it from time to time. It's that little hint that he hasn't completely lost his trust in things, he's just a little more outwardly protected against the forces that would actively do him harm.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad that you enjoyed Luke's sweet smile.

And he has such a great smile, too! I just bought the unaltered originals the other day and found myself drooling over the Ewok celebration in ROTJ . . . much more Luke footage than there is now. Even my sister commented that he had a cute smile. Yes, we rarely see him smile. He's always so serious (which kind of reminds me of something Grandmother Willow said once in the Disney Pocahontas movie). I can't remember hearing him laugh *once*, and I claim to be the Luke expert.
Nice work for a sketch! If my sketches came out like that, then I'd probably die happy . . . and Luke would have to revive me. ^_^

Actually Luke smiles, hold on a second. . . Let me think. . .
Ah yes, he smiles, slighly, just before he whispers in Han's ear, "She's rich. . ." and after they successful get away from the Deathstar, then again after landing his X-wing, and off and on throughout the very end of New Hope. I think he only smiles four times in Empire. And the only time he smiles in Jedi is when he's surrounded by Ewoks. When See-Threepio is mistaken for a God and, yes, at the very end when he sees Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda appear and of course he smiles at his sister, which I think is his biggest smile to be filmed.
Now is that just sad that I know all that?
Lucky you, you bought the UNALTERED verson. I have to wait until I can afford it. Until then I have to suffer through the other verson.

Nope, it's not sad that you know all that. Sometimes I'm even worse. It's just part of being poor, pathetic (yet proud of it!) fangirls.
Of course he's all smiles throughout A New Hope. I would be too if my life had not yet been totally wrecked by a certain Sith Lord that goes *breathe* all the time. And I just looove that whole part with 3PO getting mistaken for a god! I've always loved Luke's smile there. Ooh, hold on, I just might have some screen captures that I made . . . Here they are! [link] [link] aaand [link] Oh, and there is, of course, this one, but it's just of him being a shmexy Jedi boy smarting off to a certain wrinkly-grape Emperor, so it doesn't really count. Ha ha. [link]
And . . . I really like that smile he gives Leia. Whee! Looks like Mr. Serious isn't so serious after all. And it makes me want to jump through the screen, push Leia back to her own man, and snuggle with Luke for a spell.
Now, come to think of it, I can't really remember ever hearing him laugh . . . Can you?

Yeah he cheers/ laughs after the Tie Fighters are destroyed in a New Hope and he clearly chuckles some when Han tell's him; "That's TWO you owe me junior." In Empire. I can't think of any laughter from him in Jedi.
And of course I almost forgot the smug smile on Luke's face after Leia kissed him in the medical center. I can't forget that one though I wish I could.
The one thing I do in part two of Corellian Pledge is have Luke smile. Wheather it's sarcastically, shyly or with real amusement. I give him some moments where he does smile and doesn't tried to hide it behind his hand, like he did in Jedi.

He chuckles at "That's two you owe me, Junior," and so do I. I always do. Force (*ahem* every pun intended) of habit. And who can forget that little smug grin? Haha. I used to go "Oooohhhhh . . . " at that scene every blasted time I watched Empire . . . and then I learned they were twins.
I thought of a chuckle in Jedi. It's right after they're leaving Tatooine and Han says "Now I owe you one." That's another point at which I habitually giggle as well. And he must have found 3PO's mistaken identity quite funny . . . I tell you, just watching him watching the scene makes me fall off the couch laughing. What can I say? Laughter is catching.
I try to have Luke smile at least once in every story I write, and usually it's a little sly smile where just one corner of his mouth creeps up and his eyes start twinkling. That's my favorite kind of Luke smile, I believe. Hee . . . Unfortunately, the best description I can come up with for that is "grinned slyly." *pounds head against wall* I need to do a little better than that, methinks. (Methinks . . . what a funny word that is . . .)

Very nice sketch. You are right, Luke rarely smiles in the Star Wars movies. I think the only time I recall is the Ewok party at the end of ROTJ.
I am also a big Luke/Hamill fan. I don't have many pictures of him here but over at TFN I have a ton of fanfic illustrations of him. I can't help it I am a major Luke/Mara 'shipper.
Good work.

What is the TFN you speak of and how do I get to it to look at your Luke art?

TFN is TheForce.net which is one of the major Star Wars websites with everything from literature discussion to FanArt to Fanfiction. Here is the link [link] But for some reason the server is acting screwy today and it takes about two minutes to load up. So if you are probably better off looking at my pics at my friends small website: [link]
A lot of my early stuff is awful. I am just learning how to draw. I first started with photomanips and then got Poser and Bryce (3D modeling programs) and then finally Corel Painter.
So my early stuff is pretty pathetic. But I am getting better. And I always have Luke to inspire me to do more.
