Here's some advice.. First of all, I think your model is good, and the glass material too. The reason it looks like plastic is because you haven't got a real light nor reflection source in the scene, and the highlights and reflections become boring because of that. It's like an overcast weather vs. sunny weather. Also, try to make a better composition. Now the board is floating and even though I understand why you made it float, i think it would look better if it wasn't. You can also change the camera angle. Right now you aren't using all the potential of the camera. A picture has certain regions, where the information should be centered etc.. You'll get a lot nicer pics if you obey some simple rules. There's plenty of info about this on the web too.
If you're planning to use a studio setup in the final, you could make it a little brighter and colorful. Right now, your lighting is pure white and washes away all the details. It's like watching a monochrome picture. Why not use colors when you can? Just a small touch of blue for example can make a huge difference.
Just my 2 cents.. I'm looking forward to an update.

Thanks for the advice, I added a blue light into it and I also added a HDRI image. Its not really floating as such its sitting on 4 little leg posts one at each courner and im going to leave the camera angle the same because I like it how it is for some reason.

EXCELLENT! the pieces are sharp and clean and look like glass to me.
i know the board is glass but it could also be acrylic, too. that's how
I see it. i'm just wondering why the black squares give off those little
shadows instead of one contigenous shadow all around the board.
well, who's move it is?

Thanks, If you have a flat peice of glass some where pick it up and hold it under a light close to a table top or something, it gives off no shadow or very little so only the black sqs block the light making a shadow.
Thank you for the too the finished one will be up soon.

Didn't you say you put caustics into this? :S
Doesn't really look like it. Then again I haven't messed around with GI and caustics.. might look way different.
Put the board onto the ground... *mumbles* floating chess board.. the nerve!
Still think the glass looks funny... looks too.. plastic.. I don't know how to explain it. Like you know how you can tell the difference between something plastic and something glass even though they are quite similar?... That's what this is like.

Yes theres caustics if i rendered it without them and showed you, you could tell the difference.
The board is on the ground, Its sitting on 4 little post kinda things one in each courner you just cant see them
The Glass looks like Glass to me but thats just a matter of opinion, but i kinda get what u mean.

Very nice. Is it possible to make a 1680x1050 version? I like it a lot, and I'd love it as a wallpaper.
I like how simple and elegant all the pieces are. Very eye-catching, and they all go great together.

Thank you, I could render it that size if you like, ill send you a note or something when i have it done.
That was one of the main things I was trying to do keep it simple and have it look good.
