Nice pic! I would recommend one thing that I find very useful these days. It's called Neat Image. It's not free, but you may be able to find a copy out there for an indefinite tryout. It'll remove all the "banding" and smooth your image, while sharping at the same time. email me at webtrance@cox.net if you're interested.

Yeah, I like it a lot...smooths pretty nicely. Cafeful though, it can blur edges pretty good too.

Looks good man so there's no need for an excuse!! 
It's just too bad the real night sky isn't that clear. The only problem I really notice is the sky gradient looks kind of banded.
