She CAN be brought back, so long as the soul hasn't escaped the microchip it was contained in. However, they would need to be careful with the chip cus' one bad slip up and the soul could escape.

Unlike Pyrrha, Atlas can repair Penny. I am certain in a future volume we will see Penny 1.5. Then Ruby can steal her from Atlas and add her to the team! Β But until then, Ruby angst & grief, yeah...

You only think that because of how most sci-fi shows handle robots. Penny was different. She had a soul. Rebuilding her wouldn't repair the soul.

Β It might be possible to repeat the process. Ironwood or his research scientists learned how to do it once, and it could be done a second time. It looks like the second half of Volume 7 would be a really good time for Atlas to get her back in action. Or maybe Team RWBY flees the burning ruin of Atlas with Penny and activation/bonding know-how in hand. I'd settle for that.Β

Even if they could do it again, the point remains: Penny was one of a kind. They can't just clone her perfectly. Even if they downloaded her memories, it's likely that the new one wouldn't feel an obligations to relate to them. She'd be her own person. But in a way, that's a good thing. Being unable to recreate Penny would mean that she was real. That her friendship with Ruby was genuine. That she had a unique soul.

That is most likely true, yes. It won't quite be the same, no matter what is done to make a new Penny. It won't be the Penny of Academy days, and that's a shame. Not that it would stop Ruby from trying to be her friend again, of course! Theln again, the good Professor might have a memory backup chip to install, because RWBY honors anime tropes & why should Science! bow to your well-reasoned argument? Not saying you're wrong, mind you, but there's ways to have Penny back as is/was if the story demands it. Then again, RWBY as a story is big on actions having consequences down the line, so a shiny new Penny may likely not be the Penny we knew. Cue the angst!

Personally, I like the idea of team RWBY meeting the man who created Penny just as he's finished Penelope Polendina(Penny 2.0) and Ruby just lunges at her to hug her. But she comes to terms with the fact that she's not the same Penny she once knew and still tries to be her friend.

I keep thinking that penny is gonna show up again, in most Sci-fi series robotic characters can always be rebuilt so long as their heads remain intact, and Pennys head looked fine.

Penny's return in some form would be one of the bigger non-surprises of Volume 6. I am a jaded old otaku so it wouldn't be a surprise for me unlike all the teen fans to whom all plot twists are new!

Wait, lets think this through. Penny's a robot, and the first of her kind. What if they have backup plans incase this happens. A contingency if you will, as to....repair her.
I mean, if she's a machine, she can be fixed. Right?

True, her body can most certainly be repaired.
But you forget: Penny was a machine with a SOUL. A literal ghost in the machine.
We do not know what this entails; the possibility stand that, while Penny's form can be repaired, her Soul has already departed for what-come-next.
If so....then even if she returns, it won't really be her, not the her that we know. A new soul. None of her memories of Ruby, or any of their adventures in Vale.
What greater cruelty to inflict on poor Ruby, then for her friend to return as a complete stranger?

Actually, the soul DOES have the possibility of still being contained in the microchip. But if they transfer the microchip to a new body, they would have to be careful because one slip up could lead to the soul escaping.Β
