Description
Been posting a lot of rush work without meaning to lately (still kind of in "rehab" for my art) but figuring at this point I am just going to let go of what I have and come back to it after critique, so I do not overwork the pieces/make them too complicated. So this one is kind of a WIP but might stay abandoned. But even at it's present quality I'm still fairly proud of it~I really worked hard on getting the composition right in this. I had a bit of a concept to go with it too - the wolf has a magic that turns her/other packs into crows which she can use for surveillance and finding better hunts. Not an OC, just a little idea I wanted to run with. Painting this was mostly inspired by reading Promise of the Wolves.
Going to try to get some more speedpaints posted here cause I figure I need a fresh slate and trying to finish my 2018 art isn't happening just quite yet. I'm kind of starting over with my art style a bit and am actually going to be a little quantity over quality for awhile just as I get back into it. Hope no one minds this, and so far you all have been a great help in me getting back on gear with my art, so thank you for all of that

I do like your composition here, there's a good amount of negative space in the background and then the focal animals are spaced around the thirds of the image, so the eyes don't get stuck in one part and miss out on other details.
While I like your brushstrokes and general color scheme, I think the foreground/background definition isn't as clear - for instance, the crow on the rock kinda blends in to the background. Compositionally it's good but I think you'd want to make at least the background right behind the crow more of the sand/rocks. And then the tail end of the wolf starts blending into the rocks there, so a darker contrasting material in the background would be good.
That said, I think your overall style is great for depicting textures without being too busy.

Awesome, thank you so much for those helpful tips!! I really appreciate you pointing out both what is and isn't working. I definitely agree with all of your feedback. When I go back to rework this piece I will keep in mind everything you wrote about the crows and background, I do agree it is getting a bit hard to read as shapes are blotting together in certain areas.
Glad you find the composition as a whole working, though! That is a good hint that while I will need to fix up details, the piece as a whole could be successful and not necessarily have to be redone from scratch
