I haven't seen something this good in a very long time. I love the concept and the execution. It's beautiful in a creepy sort of way.

I like this concept, I find it very creative. The piece is nicely illustrated - especially the detail on the skeleton.
Good job. And if I may ask.. what does the book say?

Thanks, like I said in the description, it took months to complete. My professor was actually rather impressed with how fast and detailed I worked. I even impressed myself with how well it turned out.

Well it definitely impressed me!!
I have problems with starting big projects like this, I start on it and work a few hours, but when I stop, I don't start again for like months! Almost everything I've done has been one sitting!
Anyway, keep up the great work

I like the idea you have here. Also the attention to detail is excellent and the tones are really soft and deftly handled, but I see something that was one of the first things my first art teacher criticized me for - lack of contrast. The impact of the unusual cropping and subject is there, but the image overall is flat in terms of tonal value. I guess the highlights and shadows could be brought out on the skeleton to make it 'pop' more, and I suppose a bit on the face in the mirror. From one struggling traditional artist to another - I hope it helps and you don't think it too presumptous of me

Actually the photo dulled it out. This is NOTHING compared to the high contrast I have on the actual piece. I just couldn't scan it in. My professor DRILLED me until it popped. It's just a shame I can't get the picture to really show it's beauty. I'm sure it could still use some work though
Thanks for your insight!

Photoshop, m'dear. X)
I know, right? Cameras tend to dull everything and scanners emphasizes every single white speck. Ah well. I wish I could see the actual piece though. I'll bet its awesome. Ohoho~

I tried using photoshop for it. The problem was that when I tried, I ended up almost washing out the little details with the softer tones.
I'd say if you were in the area you could, but you're on another continent sadly. I'll try to get a better picture uploaded. It's a WIP trying to get it uploaded nicely.

Yeah~ it's kind of difficult to get exactly what you want out of the darn software. >>
No stress, though. It's already quite nice enough as it is.

I'm just going to leave it alone until I can find a nice scanner to really get it just right. I'm sure there are one or two around campus if I look.

Fantastic work here.. Love the concept and one can clearly see the great effort that's gone into the details here ! The shadows and lighting are so delicately handled - it looks great!
Also I sorta like your unique crops to your artwork. Don't see that too often. Nice touch

Thank you kindly. Actually the crop is actually something that my art professor helped me establish. He told us that we weren't allowed to use a normal square or rectangular boarder in our beginning drawing and I just fell in love with the odd cropped boarders. I'm glad you like it <3

This is almost one of those pieces that seems inverted from the norm. Usually, it's popular to have a person looking into the reflection of a Skeleton. Instead you did the opposite here, and it looks nice. But really, it's the quality of this pieces that really amazes me. It looks like it could be the cover of a book, or maybe a vintage vinyl album.

Thank you so much for your kind words. When I was first given the project, I was actually quite stumped for what to do. Originally I thought I would draw a skeleton in a library and add a painting, but the painting soon turned into a mirror, and the library into a single book. I feel like it was really able to evolve from my original idea, and it seemed to turn out much better than I expected. When I started this drawing, I didn't think I was good enough to do something like this, but I'm so glad my professor pushed me to do this.

Don't you just love it when your work evlve into something that you would have never conceived on your own. It's like you subconscious somehow knows better than you conscious self.

SolarLunix In reply to Scarecrowlover [2013-08-08 11:57:00 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely! My professor tries to get us to let our subconscious to take over more or less. He always tells us to push it as far as it will go, and allow it to change as it will.
