Ah, yes. Those were the days.

I missed out on those days, but the Tennant episodes had a corny fun to them that the much darker Matt Smith episodes lacked (although Smith was lovable and I have fondness for a number of the 11th episodes)Β

It's funny that you say that actually, because I thought that the Tennant and Eccleston episodes were much darker than the Smith episodes.
I mean, the Tennant episodes had an ill child being eaten alive by one of her teachers, a teenaged boy being devoured by witches on screen, characters screaming their heads off as their brains are sliced out of their heads, and a character being force fed. I don't really remember Doctor Who ever taking risks like that after Russel T Davies () left and put Steven Moffat () in charge.

...oh.. Β yeah.. Β  Β I was putting the "darker" episodes (which I have not even seen all of them) to the back of my head... Β  Β and with this topic now in discussion, that sort of material makes me question the notion of DW being labeled a "family" show. Β The same goes for un-cut animes and Disney Channel (there is a lot of inappropriate jokes in those sitcoms, which are also shows that may have subliminal family-destroying messages)Β

Doctor Who is definitely a family show now. It's gotten really corny lately.
Back then, they had a good mix. They never actually showed any of the gruesome parts happening, it all mostly occurred off screen; therefore making it only psychologically frightening, which I support a lot in family movies. It's what makes films like Coraline so great.

I just think that it's a clever way to scare the children in films and television series.
