Description
A bit of a bonus entry for the SS21 Universe in a story that takes place almost right before the events of Mario & Sonic: Heroes United. In this more darker story featuring Tails who is brought into his biggest, most personal battle yet, this is Tails The Fox: Phantom War.

Story -

After their alliance with A.I.M ended badly when the corrupt corporation betrayed them, Eggman, Bowser & Cortex decided to get revenge by waging war against them to destroy all their facilities and use their resources to take over the world. Their plan is soon put into motion when they capture any hero that might stand in their way, almost everyone...one of the notable exceptions being Tails.

After learning that the 3 villains have launched an attack and are holding Sonic The Hedgehog (his best buddy) and Coco Bandicoot (his girlfriend) hostage, Tails hurries to try and save them but only to be confronted by Eggman's newest enforcers consisting of villains who have battled Tails before and lost to him, including a new enemy named Moraxall who is powered by the Phantom Ruby.

Moraxall then effortlessly defeats Tails in their first encounter and leaves him for dead. Luckily Tails is saved by Iron Man and is brought to a secretly S.H.I.E.L.D base to recover where he also meets up with Knuckles, Juicer, Yoshi, Spider-Man *Miles Morales*, Ms. Marvel & the other surviving heroes who have evaded Eggman, Bowser & Cortex. They must now work together to figure out what the 3 villains as well as Moraxall are up to, how to save their friends and put a stop to this new evil.

For Tails, this is the most vulnerable he's ever been since before meeting Sonic. The stakes have never been higher for him and with no one close to him to help this time, Tails must find the hero within himself as he fights both physical and emotional pain to save all his friends, figure out who Moraxall is and stop him, Eggman, Bowser, Cortex and the other villains from his past in a battle where everyone is counting on him to save the world.

And that's pretty much the plot premise for this story, like I said this takes place almost right before Mario & Sonic: Heroes United begins and will impact Tails going forward into Heroes United. The idea originally came to me back in 2017 when Sonic Forces was coming out. I always imagined a similar story where Tails had to save everyone from this big new threat that was more powerful than anything that came before. And that is what led to the creation of Moraxall but since the years have passed, I decided to go back to this story and Moraxall and refine both to fit in the SS21 Universe timeline.

As for Tails looking a bit roughed up here, this is his look in this story after his first battled with Moraxall. Tails had manage to heal up since he was brought to the secret S.H.I.E.L.D base but he still has a bruised eye and a couple of scrape marks on his chest, I gave him this look to show how vulnerable he is in this story yet still ready to fight on for his friends. As for the villains, Eggman, Bowser & Cortex are leading the war against A.I.M but with help of new recruits Eggman has found that have been defeated by Tails in the past.

Speedy -

A mercenary of the Battle Bird Armada, they once tried to conquer the peaceful Cocoa Island and turn into their new training grounds. Luckily Tails was there on vacation (Tails Adventure in the SS21 Universe takes place after the Death Egg Saga, Mania & Superstars instead of before Tails met Sonic as I personally think it fits with Tails' story in the SS21 Universe) and he fought back against the Kukku Army of the Armada. He also battled Speedy who could keep up with the young fox yet in the end, Tails prevailed. After his defeat, Speedy swore revenge on Tails to have his honour restored, in the present day, he has been recruited by Eggman and given new tech to make himself faster and stronger. He gave Speedy blueprints for mechanical wings used by one of Spider-Man's villains: The Vulture, as well as parts of a spare Metal Sonic. Now Speedy is ready to take to the skies again and make Tails pay.

Dr Julian Snively -

An old lackey of Eggman's from the past, Snively assisted Eggman's various schemes such as the invasion of South Island and the Death Egg. Snively was almost as smart as Eggman but more cunning and always planning ahead. Before Eggman released Chaos on Station Square, Snively went to join G.U.N claiming he wanted a fresh start, yet in reality he was panning his own ambitions to take over the world using G.U.N's resources. When Tails found out, he teamed up with Team Dark to expose and defeat Snively who had been imprisoned since. Now that he has been freed by Eggman and given a modified version of the giant Egg Robo that Eggman used on the Lost Hex, Snively is ready to finish his unfinished business with Tails.

Wendy Witchcraft -

A powerful witch from West Side Island, she was feared by many for her magic and intimidation. Together with her minions: the witch crafters: (consisting of Carrotia, Hocke-Wolf & Bearanger), she planned to enslave all of West Side Island and turn anyone who'd oppose her into crystal. Luckily Tails found a magic ring that could be used to fight back against Witchcraft's dark magic and he used that ring to defeat her & the witch crafters. She was then imprisoned on West Side Island until the present day when Eggman freed her. Now her new goal is to destroy Tails for making a mockery of her tarnishing her feared reputation.

Lyric The Last Ancient -

The only one of Eggman's new enforcers to not originate from Earth-217, instead he came from an alternate universe (the Sonic Boom universe). Lyric was a member of an ancient civilization dedicated to preserving peace through the balance of nature and technology. Lyric at one point attempted to harness the power of a group of crystals known as the Chaos Crystals, unfortunately an accident occurred and Lyric found he was slowly dying from the exposure. He became angry at his fellow ancients when they knew how dangerous the Crystals were all along, and despite vowing they'd find a way to cure him, Lyric knew they'd never truly find a cure. In a desperate last attempt, Lyric built himself a battle suit that was actually successful in saving him.

Soon Lyric became convinced that nature had failed him and that technology could be the key to curing the incurable, so he hatched a plan to destroy all organic life in the world and replace it with robotics so that he could build the world he always wanted in his image. When the ancients found out they imprisoned Lyric in stasis and hidden the Chaos Crystals across the world. 1000 years later, Lyric was freed and attempted to finish what he started, this brought him into conflict with his world's versions of Sonic, Tails, Amy & Knuckles who managed to defeat him & reclaim the Crystals. Since his defeat Lyric was never seen or heard from again until the Multiverse Wars occurred in which Lyric not only re-encountered his versions of Sonic & Tails but also met the Earth-217 counterparts.

When the Multiverse was restored, Lyric unexpectedly was sent to Eart-217 by mistake. He spent a couple of months trying to learn all he could about the world until Eggman found him and convinced him to join Speedy, Snively & Witchcraft in a revenge act against Tails. Lyric knows this isn't his world, but he doesn't care. Any version of the heroes who led to his downfall will suffice.

Moraxall -

A powerful new enemy & Eggman, Bowser & Cortex's most deadliest ally to date, Moraxall has only one goal on his mind: The death of Tails & the destruction of all that he loves. Moraxall knows more about Tails than the other 4 villains but to how he knows he won't reveal. His entire past is shrouded in mystery that he requested Eggman to wipe all data off the systems. Moraxall's hatred to Tails is only enhanced by he power of the Phantom Ruby in a way that surpasses Infinite's rage, in fact, Eggman at one point referred to Moraxall as Infinite 2.0. Tails must find a way to figure out Moraxall's true origins, his connection to him and how to stop him.

And that's all I have to say about this story, for this artwork I took inspiration from one of the posters of Spider-Man: No Way Home which saw Spidey in a battle scene against his enemies obscured with only a part of them to hint at who they are. I tried to replicate it here but could only do it for Speedy & Lyric so the other villains are far into the distance and Snively is hidden in his Egg Robo Mech.
