I R SRS GEMOLOGST, THIS R SRS ID.Yes, that is a coffee bean that I'm "grading." I'm typically caffeine-powered on any given day. Nerdy as I am, I got all excited when they finally gave us our loupes that say "GIA" on the side. I'm not wearing my ring in this picture, unfortunately, because the other shots were used for stock. We'll have to get a good shot so people can see it
This is all Henry's fault.

When I do it, I use a toothbrush and warm, soapy water. It's safe for most stones (except really soft things like pearls) and metals. I'm not sure exactly how the store managed to get it so clean, since you can't put alexandrite in a steam- or ultrasonic cleaner.

I figure the coffee bean has much more of a visual impact than the size of stones I usually get to drool over in my loupe anyway... like if you squint really hard you might be able to imagine an alexandrite in there. I miss my coffee!
