Description
Sketch Fest #37 prompt and for me the pièce de résistanceEnsue story: At first I thought about doing a proper pin-up with lovely stockings as I do like drawing nice female legs, but I quickly figured that this would be something most people would do with this prompt and I felt I wanted to do something a bit more original. And possibly funny as well.
As it happens, the majority of the ATCs I've posted of this last week or so I have drawn while playing dvds of the UK's longest running sitcom (31 seasons) Last of the Summer Wine, a show that first appeared on television in 1973 (for me it's the type of show I can put on while doing something creative, it's easy to follow with half an eye and ear and I just like the atmosphere). The character Nora Batty, played by the late Kathy Staff, is one of my favourites of the show and in the 245 episodes that she appears I can recall only 2 where here stockings aren't wrinkly. It was clear, she had to be my stocking girl
Getting the right reference photo wasn't very straight forward. If you google 'Nora Batty' you get plenty of head shots but not many wrinkly stockings. In fact, I only found one and while a nice picture, it wasn't very funny. The only right photo I did know off was a black and white polaroid shot that was briefly shown in the second season. I ended up playing it on my pc, pausing at the right moment and taking a screen shot which I pasted in a Photoshop document and then printed. But I do have something pretty unique now and be honest, this pose of her is very pin-uppy, if she hadn't been a cranky 45+ woman with wrinkly stockings of course.
I lightly sketched her and the surroundings and then I went straight to colouring. In my Copic markers with felt tip I have all the even numbers of Cool Grey while in my Copic markers with brush tip I have all the uneven numbers, so together I had the whole range and I used every one of them, plus black, to try and get the colouring as accurate as possible. I'm very very happy with how it turned out. I very rarely draw true realistic things so it is nice to sort of discover that I can actually do it.
Obviously I'm not going to part with this lady, this card is special to me both because of how well it works and because of who it represents. Though truth be told, I don't think anyone would want to trade for a card of a cranky 45+ woman with wrinkly stockings. Well, unless you're a Nora Batty fan, I can't be the only one surely?

yeah nora is camera shy just like the waffen SS to paraphrase compo and foggy
are you sure that the picture is from series 2 ?
i recall foggy was present ( or seymour ) and they came in long after series 2 ( foggy in series 3 seymour in series 9 )
i cant really recall the episode ill have to dig through the 18 series i have
maybe it was seymour after all
and yes i am fan of last of the summerwine how can you tell ?
series 1 is playing as i type this ( pate and chips )
personally i feel the series should have stopped with just a small funeral which would have been the perfect capstone for the series
compo was after all the main character
having said that and a lot of people seem to like foggy as the third man there seems to be little enthusiasm for seymour
which is a bit of a shame considering he had closer ties to edie wesley barry and glenda him being family of them and all

I'm very sure, as I have the dvds and I looked up the episode so I could take a screen shot of the photo in order to draw it
Things weren't the same after Compo had died, but at the same time I do still quite like the series after that, even if it got a bit repetetive. For me they could have continued for even longer because I liked the other characters enough (and I rather like like all the 'third men' in the series, though Foggy is probably my favourite). But had they stopped after Compo's funeral I would have accepted that too as it was indeed a perfect time to do so. Either way, I still tear up each time I see that episode.

im certain it was a later episode i can even paraphrase the scene
foggy : you have a photo of nora batty ?
compo : oh aye i borrowed our kids camera she didnt want to have her photo took i think she is shy
foggy : yes the waffen SS was very similair
last post and pigeon is usually what gets me
especially because we know thats one of the few times we see compo
the post 2000 series do get a bit repetitive but lets be honest here the series was getting kinda repetitive as well
howard and marina's "escapades" were the thing that was the most repetitive
and even though i liked foggy he and edie tend to get on my nerves in the later series
i liked seymour because he always provided a d tacit connection between compo and clegg and the pegdens seeing as edie is his sister
that was some much needed cohesion

Seriously, I HAVE THE DVD! *lol* I looked it up and it really is series 2 (episode 4, Some Enchanted Evening, aired 1975).
I do remember thise photos having been shown twice, so I'm guessing you are remembering the second time, which would have been later because of Foggy. The first time the third man was Blamire and that conversation (about the photos) was completely rather different.
I rather liked Blamire too, he was smarter but without the pompousness later third men showed. I also rather liked Truly of the Yard, but well, it's an older Captain Peaock isn't it.

i have the dvd's too
up to series 22
i am probably remembering the second time i tend to skip some enchanted evening because i dont like the episode
but the scene i remember is with foggy i just cant remember what episode and its driving me up a wall
i thought i would hate blamire actually but i came to find that i rather like him
its mostly foggy's second tenure where he grates me
and truly really is an older captain pocock err peacock but there is nothing wrong with that
though truly is less stuffy and pompous and more willing to get in to mischief ( like blamire and sid )

I don't know the series and this isn't my favorite style of drawing (I think it's the black and white thing?), but nonetheless... I love the originality of it and the humor you've used! *Grin*
Furthermore, I think it's awesome that you're on a drawingspree AND that you keep trying new stuff lately. Keep it up!

Is it still a drawing style if you try to replicate a photo as accurately as possible (given the media you work with)? Just wondering
Anyway, LotSW, you may not have seen it, but you do know one actor, or his voice anyway. Peter Sallis has been in every episode of the series since it began but also does the voice of Wallace from the Wallace & Gromit animations
Keeping it up though, this drawing spree, that will be tricky. I do have a lot of prompts left to do still (or that I would like to do) and I want to try and actually enter a Sketch Fest when it's happening, rather then after the fact. And I do have at least one non-ATC idea I would like to try, concerning the comic (or a page of it anyway). But I also tend to work in phases and I might want to do something completely different any time soon. You never know with me. But so far this ATC-format has been really suitable for me

It really doesn't matter what you do creatively, as long as you keep at it! Creative outbursts tend to create even more creative outbursts

Haha, I love it, and the little story to go with it. I can see why you'd like to keep this one.

Nora Batty and almost all the women in the series, they're like how the Nicandus elves are but worse *grin* (they don't hate men but they do like them obedient). Apparently is a trait of Yorkshire women
